PH in a bind, experts warn; DFA summons Chinese envoy
Huang Xilian —MALACAÑANG FILE PHOTO MANILA, Philippines — China has put the Philippines in a bind by sending a swarm of its maritime militia vessels to a reef in the West Philippine Sea where Manila would play into the hands of Beijing if it takes no action against the incursion or be portrayed as escalating tension between the two countries if it does, maritime and security experts said on Tuesday. The massive deployment of over 200 Chinese vessels at the Julian Felipe (Whitsun) Reef last month could also close the gap between two of China’s artificial islands within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone (EEZ) and pressure the Philippines to choose to ally itself with China or the United States, they said. If there is “inaction” to the swarm, “in Beijing’s point of view that’s basically getting a victory out of it because there’s no response from the victim,” said Collin Koh, research fellow at S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies in Singapore. “The other course ... » Learn More about PH in a bind, experts warn; DFA summons Chinese envoy

Uber expands higher-margin U.S. transit software business with three new agencies
(Reuters) - Uber Technologies Inc on Wednesday said it had signed deals with three new transit agencies to provide routing and matching technology for their public transportation fleets, the company's latest foray into the transit space. Denver's Regional Transportation District, Cecil County Transit in Maryland and the transit agency of Central California's Porterville will use Uber's software to operate their transit or paratransit service, the company said. Passengers in those cities can book transit or wheelchair-friendly rides through the Uber app, but unlike regular ride-hail trips, transportation will be provided through the transit agencies' drivers and vehicles. Uber did not disclose financial details of the agreements, but an executive last year said providing software presented higher margins for the company than traditional ride-hail services. Uber said it remained in active discussions with several other transit agencies. The company had previously announced ... » Learn More about Uber expands higher-margin U.S. transit software business with three new agencies
Pattaya tour group businesses shutting up shop for a month
Tourism businesses in Pattaya, that cater specifically to the Chinese market and tour groups, are preparing to shut down for a full month. Despite technically being the high season for tourism, and the middle of the Chinese New Year annual holidays, the fallout from the coronavirus outbreak has already had a profound impact. The Chinese tourists who managed to get to Thailand for their annual break have already gone home, according to 77koaded. With travel bans on tour groups announced and enforced by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism in China, boat restaurants, regular restaurants and shows that cater to the Chinese say their businesses have been affected so badly, they’re closing shop until at least the end of February. 77koaded report that just a few Europeans were left on ten restaurant boats in Pattaya bay that are normally “heaving” at this time of the year. Man admits stalking young woman from JC to university, hired private eyes to film her
SINGAPORE: Over a year and four months, a man stalked a young woman he had seen in school, through junior college and university, creating 17 Instagram accounts to harass her, emailing her father and hiring private investigators to film her. Toh Wen Jie, 20, pleaded guilty midway through a trial on Wednesday (Apr 14) to one count of stalking the victim between October 2018 and February 2020. He sent her sexually explicit messages, calling her his fiancee, girlfriend and wife. According to court documents, he used "burner phones" and accounts when she blocked or ignored him. Toh waited for her outside her university for three to four hours a time over about a week, and wrote on his own question-and-answer Tellonym account that he had "a lot of time to kill" and that "I will literally strangle you if (it's) not against the law". The court heard that Toh first began eyeing the victim in 2016 when she was taking part in an event that is unnamed to protect her identity. Violent ducks? Hong Kong clothing brand cartoons rile China
Cute cartoon animals have been at the heart of Hong Kong clothing brand Chickeeduck since 1990, but owner Herbert Chow is struggling to get his designs made. HONG KONG: Cute cartoon animals have been at the heart of Hong Kong clothing brand Chickeeduck since 1990, displayed on everything from t-shirts and tote bags to baby rompers and pillows. But owner Herbert Chow is now struggling to get his designs made in China, where his avian characters have been seized by authorities for "advocating violence". Chow, 57, was preparing for the Lunar New Year shopping season earlier this year when he was informed that a shipment of some 10,000 Chickeeduck items had been seized in mainland China. "My manufacturer said the customs department found the products were advocating violence in social movements," Chow told AFP after recently deciding to go public. At first glance, the contraband cartoons might seem innocuous. They included cushions with yellow birds holding umbrellas alongside ... » Learn More about Violent ducks? DOF: Over P752B in loans, grants secured to fight COVID-19
MANILA, Philippines—The $1.2 billion in loans secured by the Philippines from multilateral institutions to buy vaccines have inflated total borrowings and grants for COVID-19 response to $15.49 billion, or more than P750 billion to date, the Department of Finance (DOF) said. The updated list of financing that the DOF obtained to boost the Philippines’ COVID-19 war chest as of April 8 included loans amounting to $500 million from the Washington-based World Bank, $400 million from the Manila-based Asian Development Bank (ADB) and $300 million from the Beijing-based Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB). All three new loans were signed by Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez III on behalf of the Philippine government last March. Lunch With Sumiko: Grab whiz Tan Hooi Ling happy to stay low-key
I was planning to use GrabCar to get to my lunch with Ms Tan Hooi Ling, the co-founder of Grab. But the night before, I heard how a private-hire car driver had to ask his passenger to guide him along the route. I didn't want to risk being late, so I called for a Comfort cab instead. The driver had no problems getting me there. Ms Tan has chosen Bukit Merah View Market and Food Centre to meet. Her PR folks had assured me there was a reason for her choice. It's a hot day and the centre is noisy, filling up fast with a lunch crowd. I settle at a table in the quietest corner I can find and message Grab's PR manager, Claire, to let her know where I'm sitting. They arrive, via Grab, of course. Ms Tan, 33, whose title is both co-founder and chief operating officer, is tall and very slim. She's in a black T-shirt and jeans, both from Uniqlo, and white sneakers. She's barefaced except for a lick of lipstick, and carries a grey, haversack-styled bag. She could pass off as a university ... » Learn More about Lunch With Sumiko: Grab whiz Tan Hooi Ling happy to stay low-key
