House Democrats opened Donald Trump’s historic second impeachment trial on Tuesday showing the former President whipping up a rally crowd to march to the Capitol and “fight like hell” against his re-election defeat, followed by graphic video of the deadly attack on U.S. Congress that came soon after. Senators agreed on Tuesday to consider the case, rejecting an attempt by the former President's defense team and some Republican allies to halt the trial because he is no longer in office. The vote was 56-44 on the question of whether the Senate has jurisdiction and could proceed. The lead prosecutor told senators the case would present “cold, hard facts” against Mr. Trump, who is charged with inciting the mob siege of the Capitol to overturn the election he lost to Democrat Joe Biden. Senators sitting as jurors, many who themselves fled for safety that day, watched the jarring video of Trump supporters battling past police to storm the halls, Trump flags waving. “That's a ... » Learn More about Donald Trump’s second impeachment trial opens with jarring video of Capitol siege

Donald Trump’s second trial to start with challenge to its legitimacy
Donald Trump's historic second impeachment trial is an undertaking like no other in U.S. history, the defeated former president charged by the House with inciting the violent mob attack on the U.S. Capitol to overturn the election in what prosecutors argue is the "most grievous constitutional crime." Trump's lawyers insist as the Senate trial opens Tuesday that he is not guilty on the sole charge of "incitement of insurrection," his fiery words just a figure of speech, even as he encouraged a rally crowd to "fight like hell" for his presidency. The Capitol siege on Jan. 6 stunned the world as rioters stormed the building to try to stop the certification of President-elect Joe Biden's victory. No witnesses are expected to be called, in part because the senators sworn as jurors, forced to flee for safety, will be presented with graphic videos recorded that day. Holed up at his Mar-a-Lago club in Florida, Trump has declined a request to testify. World Insights: What to watch for second impeachment of Trump
Video PlayerClose by Matthew Rusling WASHINGTON, Feb. 8 (Xinhua) -- Tuesday will mark a historic occasion: the second impeachment trial of former U.S. President Donald Trump. The impeachment comes a month after a riot occurred in Washington, D.C., in which a number of Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol Building, breaking property and threatening lawmakers. Democrats charge Trump with inciting the riot, although Republicans contend the speech that preceded the riot was political boilerplate, and contained no language telling people specifically to behave violently. The House of Representatives has charged the former president with "incitement of insurrection" for his role in the Jan. 6 riot, in which rioters killed one police officer and police shot dead one U.S. military veteran. Three others died of natural causes, U.S. media reported. Trump had claimed for a month that the presidential election was rigged, and supporters marched to the Capitol Building on Jan. 6 in a bid to ... » Learn More about World Insights: What to watch for second impeachment of Trump

Trump lawyers blast impeachment trial as ‘political theater’
WASHINGTON — Lawyers for Donald Trump on Monday blasted the impeachment case against him as an act of "political theater" and accused House Democrats on the eve of the former president's trial of exploiting the chaos and trauma of last month's Capitol riot for their party's gain. Trump's legal brief is a wide-ranging attack on the House case, foreshadowing the claims his lawyers intend to present on the same Senate floor that was invaded by rioters on Jan. 6. The sharp-tongued tone, with accusations that Democrats are making "patently absurd" arguments and trying to "silence a political opponent," makes clear that Trump's lawyers are preparing to challenge both the constitutionality of the trial and any suggestion that he was to blame for the insurrection. "While never willing to allow a 'good crisis' to go to waste, the Democratic leadership is incapable of understanding that not everything can always be blamed on their political adversaries, no matter how very badly they may wish ... » Learn More about Trump lawyers blast impeachment trial as ‘political theater’
