By Amar Patnaik ‘The history of childhood is a nightmare from which we have only recently begun to awaken’. This observation made by deMause, an investigator in psycho-histories in 2005 regarding traditions of child-rearing in different times and cultures, holds good for each age. He expounded that the evolution of child rearing gives insight into the development of a particular society. If this is the yardstick, what does that say about India’s development when a mechanism to ensure data privacy of children is absent, while their presence online is normalised through formal government approval due to COVID induced physical meeting restrictions. Enormity of the problem As of 2019, the report of the Internet and Mobile Association of India noted that almost two-thirds of the internet users in India fall into the age brackets of 12-29 years. The report found that from a total number of 451 million monthly active internet users, over 66 million were in the age group of ... » Learn More about A black mirror for policy makers: Looking at data protection for minors

Bengaluru tops list of cities in ease of living
(This story was first published in Times of India on March 4, 2021) Bengaluru has emerged as the best city on ease of living parameters among 49 million-plus cities in 2020, pushing the earlier top ranker Pune to number two. Among 62 cities having less than one million population, Shimla has topped the list followed by Bhubaneswar, according to the Union housing and urban development ministry. The report was released by Union housing and urban affairs minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Thursday. The assessment exercise was carried out last year just before the lockdown. No city has been included from West Bengal because of “data challenge”, the report said. According to the report, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Surat, Navi Mumbai, Coimbatore, Vadodara, Indore and Greater Mumbai are the other eight cities that have found place in the top 10 among the million-plus cities in the EoLI. While Delhi ranks at 13, its neighbouring Ghaziabad and Faridabad have found place at 30 ... » Learn More about Bengaluru tops list of cities in ease of living
How brands will target ads to you after the death of browser cookies
(Subscribe to our Today's Cache newsletter for a quick snapshot of top 5 tech stories. Click here to subscribe for free.) Next year, Alphabet Inc's Google plans to phase out technology in its Chrome browser that lets other companies track users' web browsing . But that does not mean you will see irrelevant ads, or that the pair of shoes you have been eyeing will stop following you around the web. Here is why Google is making the move, the backlash it has generated and how advertisers plan to personalise ads even after the company kills off a technology known as third-party cookies. Privacy concerns Severe data breaches early last decade led to ground breaking privacy laws, in place since 2018 in the European Union and California, that impose significant fines on violators. The laws ushered an end to the era of big tech companies tracking users' every move - often without permission - and sharing that data however they wanted with other businesses. Scientists build fastest laser-powered random number generator
(Subscribe to our Today's Cache newsletter for a quick snapshot of top 5 tech stories. Click here to subscribe for free.) An international team of scientists have designed a single chip-scale laser that can generate random numbers at ultrahigh rates, more than a hundred times faster than the current fastest random-numbers generator system. The process of random number generation is important in computing since it forms the base of cryptography. Random numbers are widely used for information security, cryptography, and quantum stimulations. The more random the key of any security system is, the harder it is to break the code logically. It is for this reason, that random number generators are used to encrypt data. The system termed as “massively parallel ultrafast random bit generation” could be used to increase the ability to generate streams of random numbers or bits, that in turn can generate cryptography keys that secure critical data. “As networks expand in an ... » Learn More about Scientists build fastest laser-powered random number generator
Gradeup launches new brand campaign featuring Kartik Aaryan
Gradeup , the competitive exam preparation platform, has announced the launch of its first brand campaign – ‘Sahi Prep Hai, Toh Life Set Hai’ featuring actor and youth icon Kartik Aaryan . The campaign consists of a series of five brand films which focus on enabling opportunities for students preparing for various competitive exams and establish Gradeup as a preferred platform for exam preparation. Conceptualised by Mirchi Brewery and directed by Vibhu Puri, the films focus on how every student has a unique way of studying and yet they are uncertain if their preferred method is the right one. The first brand film revolves around Rohan ‘Data’ Shankar, a small town boy who claims to be an expert in making the perfect study plan for his exam preparation; but when asked if he is confident of clearing the examination, he is not very positive. The campaign then delivers the message that students should not spend their precious time devising multiple study plans, rather use the ... » Learn More about Gradeup launches new brand campaign featuring Kartik Aaryan
SpaceX rocket explodes after landing in test flight
Video Player Close LOS ANGELES, March 3 (Xinhua) -- An unmanned SpaceX's Starship prototype on Wednesday exploded on the ground shortly after landing in a test flight, according to a SpaceX video online. After the flight, flames were seen to come out from the bottom of the Starship rocket Serial Number 10, or SN10, and it exploded minutes after landing. During the flight, the spacecraft shut down three Raptor engines in sequence during the ascent, flew to a planned peak altitude of 10 km, and then performed a "belly flop" maneuver to a horizontal orientation to descend back to its landing pad. SN10 had a beautiful soft landing on the landing pad in the site at Boca Chica, Texas, said John Insprucker, a SpaceX engineer who hosted the company's webcast of the flight. But it exploded a few minutes after it stood on the concrete pad, rising up and crashing down again in a huge fireball. The cause of the explosion, or whether it was intentional, was not immediately clear. ... » Learn More about SpaceX rocket explodes after landing in test flight

US officials seek politics in virus probe
Some United States officials continue to politicize the COVID-19 pandemic. On Sunday, for instance, National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said: "We need a credible, open, transparent international investigation led by the World Health Organization...We do not believe that China has made available sufficient original data into how this pandemic began to spread, both in China and then eventually around the world." Sullivan continues to reject claims by scientists from about 10 countries that there is no evidence to suggest the novel coronavirus originated in China. Nobody knew anything about the novel coronavirus when it emerged, yet the underlying charge is that China's early approach to the virus must have been resolutely omniscient, with anything short of such being deemed "guilty" in terms of a cover-up. Here the narrative again supersedes fact. Why does the origin and circumstances of a disease have to be pinned on a given country, territory or political system? Viruses are ... » Learn More about US officials seek politics in virus probe
