A source in the government said hackers have been trying to target the country’s power utilities since February. Last month’s power outage in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) was possibly the result of a sophisticated sabotage attempt involving foreign entities, a probe carried out by the state police’s cyber cell has revealed. The month-long probe detected presence of multiple “suspicious log – ins” into the servers connected with power supply and transmission utilities by accounts operating from Singapore and a few other south Asian countries. The state police is now coordinating with national agencies to determine if these “intrusions, interferences” were part of a coordinated effort aimed at crippling the country’s financial capital. Even unique ‘islanding’ system, Rs 500-cr annual surcharge failed to protect city. What went wrong? A power grid comprises a network of transmission lines connecting a power plant to households through high-voltage lines. In between, the electricity is sent through a number of substations, where the high voltage aka transmission voltage is ‘stepped down’ to distribution voltage to allow it to be used in households without frying up appliances. In Mumbai, these substations are at Salsette, Kalwa, Borivali, Vikhroli, Kharghar and Versova. The city gets electricity from four distributors: the state-owned Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL), BEST Undertaking, and private players Tata Power and Adani Electricity . The blackout, although a surprise, wasn’t the result of an overnight, single failure. Problems began three days ago. ♦ October 10: One of the transmission grids—the 400 kV Talegaon-Kalwa line—was shut down to address a ‘technical ... » Learn More about Multiple power trips, grid separation failure to blame

By Avik Chattopadhyay The spark On February 1, 2021, after the budget presentation, on being asked by a television reporter why there was no mention of electric mobility , Nitin Gadkari, the Union Road Transport and Highways Minister, made an interesting remark. “The country needs to explore more self-sufficient and self-reliant methods of powering mobility to reduce our dependence on imports!” This was significant and one needs to read between the lines; especially if one couples the National Hydrogen Mission [NHM] that was announced by the Finance Minister. On February 8, the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy told the media that the draft of NHM will be ready in two months. A team of researchers has developed a tool to identify security and privacy risks associated with Covid-19 contact tracing apps . "COVIDGuardian", the first automated security and privacy assessment tool, tests contact tracing apps for potential threats such as malware, embedded trackers and private information leakage. Using the "COVIDGuardian" tool, cybersecurity experts from Queen Mary University of London assessed 40 Covid-19 contact tracing apps that have been employed worldwide for potential privacy and security threats. They found that 72.5 per cent of the apps use at least one insecure cryptographic algorithm. "Three quarters of apps contained at least one tracker that reports information to third parties such as Facebook Analytics or Google Firebase. While most apps were free of malware, the Kyrgyzstan app 'Stop Covid-19 KG' was discovered to have malware," the researchers said in a paper scheduled to be presented at the virtual International Conference ... » Learn More about New tool spots to identify security and privacy issues with COVID-19 tracing apps
Sanjay Kumar Singh suggests key factors investors need to keep an eye on while choosing the direct investment route. Illustration: Dominic Xavier/ Rediff.com Retail participation in direct equities rose at a rapid pace last year. This is evident from the rise in the number of new demat accounts that were opened -- a record 6.8 million between April and October 2020. Non-institutional participation in the cash segment of the market, which serves as a proxy for retail participation, also went up between March and November 2020, from an average of around Rs 22,500 crore (Rs 225 billion) to Rs 35,000 crore (Rs 350 billion). Those choosing the direct investment route, however, need to bear in mind that beating professional fund managers or even the leading benchmark indices over the long term, is not an easy feat to pull off.
