DILG exec’s ‘lugaw’ remark a reminder to base hiring on capability not politics – Robredo

MANILA, Philippines — Vice President Leni Robredo thinks that the attempt of an official of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) to drag her into a recent controversy — about whether “lugaw,” or rice porridge, is an essential item that can be delivered during curfew hours — could serve as a reminder for the government to hire people based on job qualifications and not politics. “I don’t want to waste time on that,” she said in Filipino on Sunday during her weekly radio show, “BISErbisyong LENI”, on AM radio station DZXL. Neither she nor program anchor Ely Saludar identified the DILG official, but they were obviously referring to Undersecretary Epimaco Densing III. Densing reacted to a viral video showing a barangay official blocking the delivery of lugaw during curfew, saying that it was “not essential.” In his reaction, Densing was quoted as saying that “lugaw” was not essential — an allusion to Robredo, which he admitted. China struggles to meet targets for vaccination without making it mandatory

BEIJING (The Straits Times/ANN): China has insisted that inoculations against Covid-19 are entirely voluntary, but various measures have suggested the reality of its massive national vaccination exercise is far more complex. While the central authorities have called for an end to the heavy-handed measures, the country still faces an uphill task in meeting its target of vaccinating 40 per cent of its population, or about 560 million people, by the end of June. As at Tuesday (April 13), over 175.6 million doses of various Covid-19 vaccines have been administered across China, the National Health Commission (NHC) announced. With five vaccines having received emergency use approvals, China is now confident it has enough for its domestic needs, as well as to meet overseas sales and donation obligations. But uptake has been less than enthusiastic. A survey by Peking University, the Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the NHC found that only 23 per cent of ... » Learn More about China struggles to meet targets for vaccination without making it mandatory

Young and infected: COVID-19’s new patients as India battles huge surge

NEW DELHI: Ajay Singh Yadav only managed a final video call with Raj Karan before his close friend became the latest of an alarming number of young Indians, including children, falling victim to the COVID-19 wave sweeping the country. Some doctors say the reason that under-45s are now vulnerable is that they go to work and eat out more, but there is no definitive proof. They could also be more prone to a new "double mutant" variant found in 60 per cent of samples in Maharashtra, the hardest-hit state. Karan, 38, was campaigning in village elections when he fell ill. Yadav rushed him to a hospital, but he too tested positive and was put into isolation. "I am devastated ... I could only see him via a video call," Yadav, 39, told AFP in the northern city of Lucknow. The nation of 1.3 billion people has been hit by a new wave that has caused 1 million positive tests in a week, and authorities are rattled. At the start of the year, India thought it had beaten the pandemic ... » Learn More about Young and infected: COVID-19’s new patients as India battles huge surge

Masks come off as Israel vaunts COVID-19 victory

JERUSALEM: Israelis stepped into the streets without masks on Sunday (Apr 18) for the first time in a year, a key milestone as the country vaccinates its way out of a coronavirus nightmare. "It's very strange but it's very nice," said Eliana Gamulka, 26, after getting off a bus near the busy Jerusalem shopping boulevard of Jaffa Street and removing her face covering. "You can't pretend that you don't know anyone any more," she smiled. With over half the population fully vaccinated in one of the world's fastest anti-COVID 19 inoculation campaigns, the health ministry announced on Thursday that masks would no longer be required in public outdoor spaces. For Gamulka, a project manager, the good news came at the perfect time - just two weeks before her wedding. It will be "very nice to celebrate with everyone, now without masks", she said. "The pictures will be great! I'm very relieved. We can start living again." Israel reopens restaurants, bars with 40% of country fully vaccinated

JERUSALEM: Israel took another step towards post-pandemic normalcy on Sunday (Mar 7), opening restaurants, bars and cafes to vaccinated "green pass" holders, with about 40 per cent of the population fully inoculated against the coronavirus. "We are coming back to life," Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared, as he cut into a pastry at a Jerusalem cafe, in a video posted on Facebook. Israel, which launched its vaccination campaign in December, has given the recommended two jabs of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine to more than 3.7 million of its roughly 9 million people. Nearly 5 million have received one shot. READ: Israel postpones drive to vaccinate Palestinian workers The country launched its green pass programme last month, allowing controlled numbers of people with proof of full vaccination - or those who have recovered from COVID-19 - to enter gyms, pools and other facilities. Pakistan police and rangers taken hostage in anti-France protests

LAHORE, Pakistan (AFP) - At least seven Pakistan police officers and special rangers were taken hostage Sunday (April 18) by supporters of a radical Islamist party, officials said, after days of violent anti-France protests. Rioting has rocked the country since Monday, when the leader of the now-banned Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) was detained in the second biggest city Lahore after calling for the expulsion of the French ambassador. The protests have paralysed cities and led to the deaths of six policemen, prompting the French embassy to recommend all its nationals temporarily leave the country. "The TLP members are holding five police officers and two rangers hostage," said Rana Arif, a police spokesman in Lahore told Agence France-Presse (AFP), referring to the country's paramilitary force. Firdous Ashiq Awan, a spokeswoman for the Punjab provincial government, said 12 policemen had been abducted and taken to a TLP mosque in Lahore, where hundreds of supporters were ... » Learn More about Pakistan police and rangers taken hostage in anti-France protests

Deadly clashes after Islamists take police hostage in Pakistan’s Lahore

LAHORE, Pakistan (Reuters) - Police in Pakistan said a hardline Islamist group had taken six security personnel hostage at its headquarters in Lahore on Sunday after a week of violent clashes following the arrest of the group's leader. The Tehrik-i-Labaik Pakistan (TLP) group had given the government an April 20 deadline to expel the French ambassador over the publication of cartoons in France depicting the Prophet Mohammad. The authorities responded by arresting its leader, prompting supporters to hold protests and sit-ins across Pakistan. At least four people were killed, hundreds injured, and thousands arrested. Pakistan banned the group after the violence. A senior police officer and two paramilitary were among the six being held by supporters of (TLP), Lahore police spokesman Arif Rana told Reuters.
