Trump’s new tariffs couldn’t come at a worse time for the auto industry
source Mark Lyons/Getty Images President Donald Trump announced Thursday that the US would impose new tariffs on imported steel and aluminum. The auto industry, which is already in at an “inflection point” for sales, has overwhelmingly said the tariffs will hurt business. President Trump’s new tariffs on imported steel and aluminum couldn’t come at a worse time for the US automotive industry. Auto sales in the US have already reached an inflection point after seven years of rocketing growth, and rising costs resulting from tariffs, higher interest rates, and any disruptions to global trade could all exacerbate any slowdown in the industry. “If all this was happening in 2015 it wouldn’t be as concerning because the market was growing like crazy” Karl Brauer, publisher of Kelly’s Blue Book said in an interview. “But now we’re in sort of a whipsaw effect at the end … [Read more...] about Trump’s new tariffs couldn’t come at a worse time for the auto industry
Straits Times wins eight Society for News Design awards
Is cycling the way to go for Singapore's car-lite vision? Why has there been a spate of wild animal sightings in urban Singapore? An interactive take on these hot topics and other issues helped The Straits Times win eight awards of excellence from the Society for News Design (SND), up from the two it bagged last year. The prizes were for digital graphics and online projects ranging from experimental design for its interactive Smart Nation project, to its feature No One Dies Alone, which followed the eponymous programme by Assisi Hospice, whose volunteers and staff kept a dying man company. ST's interactive graphics on Singapore's wild animals, for example, integrated photos, videos, maps and icons. The project won an award for excellence under the Graphics: Features and planned coverage category. Another interactive graphic, Cycling to a car-lite Singapore, also won an award in the same category. The multimedia project pitted three teams against each other to see what happened when … [Read more...] about Straits Times wins eight Society for News Design awards
Fox News to announce stand-alone subscription service with opinion programming for superfans
By MICHAEL M. GRYNBAUM The New York Times Mon., Feb. 19, 2018 Thanks to a relentless news cycle — and a dedicated fan in the Oval Office — Fox News has defied the downward trends in the television business, notching its highest-rated year in 2017 even as audiences dwindled for many networks. But the mass migration of viewers away from traditional cable and satellite packages is accelerating. And now Fox News is plotting a leap into the uncertain digital future that rivals like CNN have so far put off. On Tuesday, Fox News is set to announce Fox Nation, a stand-alone subscription service available without a cable package. The streaming service, expected to start by the end of the year, would focus primarily on right-leaning commentary, with original shows and cameos by popular personalities like Sean Hannity. It would not overlap with Fox News’s 24-hour cable broadcast — not even reruns — because of the channel’s contractual … [Read more...] about Fox News to announce stand-alone subscription service with opinion programming for superfans
