Verse over the counter: Peotry as the cure for depression

· December 14, 2019 ·

It is a particularly depressing evening. On the surface, everything seems to be going well. Perhaps most people will tell me to be grateful for what I have. And yet, there is a certain emptiness — call it ennui — that fills the soul. And it is on one such evening that I read ‘My Brilliant Image’ by Hafez.I wish I could show you, when you are lonely or in darkness, the astonishing light of your own being!(translated by Daniel Ladinsky) Healing wordsNow if this poem were a pill, I would pop it every day to make my lows go away. It reminds us we have immeasurable power within us, power we often don’t see. It is also the ‘prescribed’ poem for loneliness and other conditions such as general malaise, loss of self-esteem, or low motivation in the book called The Poetry Pharmacy. · December 15, 2019 ·

Video PlayerClose CHICAGO, Dec. 14 (Xinhua) -- A study of Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis suggests that while considering patients' physical health, physicians evaluating young patients with hip pain also should consider screening those patients for clinical depression and anxiety, impairments that can have a negative impact on outcomes following hip surgery, such as pain, slower recoveries and inadequate return to activity. The researchers analyzed data from more than 5,600 hip surgery patients aged 29 to 41. All of the studies in the analysis included evaluations of the effects of depression or anxiety on postsurgical clinical outcomes, such as use of pain-killing drugs after an operation, return to pre-surgery activities, and overall patient satisfaction following surgery. In every study, patients with anxiety and depression prior to surgery were statistically less likely to have good outcomes after their operations. All of the patients had undergone … [Read more...] about Depression, anxiety may hinder healing in young patients with hip pain: study
