Game-changer for Melaka

KUALA LUMPUR: The new Melaka Waterfront Economic Zone (M-WEZ) is expected to transform the state’s economic and social landscape. Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr Sulaiman Md Ali said the new economic zone targets to attract more than RM100bil in high-impact, high-value investments over a 15-year period, and create over 20,000 new jobs annually. The M-WEZ will be on 25,000 acres of coastal and reclaimed land, and a 33km stretch running from northern Melaka near Sungai Udang to the south in Umbai. Sulaiman also said it will contribute at least 5% to the state’s annual gross domestic product (GDP), excluding the contribution via direct income taxes to the federal government by companies operating in the zone. He described M-WEZ as a game-changer and an economic enabler for the state, and the main pillar of the Melaka Strategic Plan 2035. “In an increasingly competitive world, Melaka needs to embark on new drivers to spur its economic development and create a new growth area ... » Learn More about Game-changer for Melaka

Kids climbing the walls

The Lai kids used to do their homework at the dining table, which was placed in the balcony of their condominium apartment. That worked well when they just had paper-based assignments to complete. But when the circuit breaker and home-based learning were announced, their mum, Ms Vivien Teo, 37, decided her primary schoolers needed more space for online learning. Their play area under a loft bed made way for an additional desk, so Caden, nine, and Gerlene, seven, can study there at the same time. Eldest child Valene, 11, also got her own room since she will be entering her teenage years soon. The family lives in a 144 sq m, four-bedroom apartment. "When you're working, you don't have time to think about what you need to do around the home," says Ms Teo, who founded children's furniture company Kids Haven eight years ago. It was only during the circuit breaker that she spent more time at home and took stock of her kids' emergent needs - like how they needed a more conducive ... » Learn More about Kids climbing the walls

CCSA officials plan to allow 7 groups of foreigners to enter Thailand

Authorities are still trying to figure out who will be allowed to enter Thailand, and how it should be handled. But today the government narrowed it down to 7 groups of foreigners, some under the developing ‘travel bubble’ scheme, and others that may require quarantine. The Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration still plans to discuss the proposed groups with government officials before nailing down the final plans. • 4 groups will probably have to go through state quarantine to enter the country including businessmen and investors, labourers and exporters, medical tourists, and permanent residents of Thailand, such spouses of Thai nationals. 30,000 medical tourists have registered to enter and 22,000 labourers and exporters have registered. 2,000 Thai spouses and permanent residents have also registered along with 700 businessmen. • 3 groups will be able to skip the 14 day quarantine under a proposed ‘travel bubble’ scheme which would allow people to travel to limited areas ... » Learn More about CCSA officials plan to allow 7 groups of foreigners to enter Thailand
