Donald Trump offers protection to immigrants for US-Mexico border wall funding
Seeking to end the federal government shutdown, President Donald Trump has offered temporary protection for people illegally brought to the US as children in exchange for USD 5.7 billion for constructing a wall on the Mexico border. The impasse between the Trump-led Republican Party and the Democratic Party led by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi over the border wall led to the shutdown, which has rendered 800,000 federal government workers without work and crippled key departments. The shutdown-- the longest in US history-- entered its 29th day, as Trump Saturday made the announcement. The president has also proposed protection to other groups of immigrants facing deportation. "Both sides in Washington must simply come together," Trump said in a White House speech, adding he is trying to "break the logjam." Defending his plan for the US-Mexico border wall, he said, "Walls are not immoral, in fact they are the opposite of immoral because they will save many lives." Trump said he was … [Read more...] about Donald Trump offers protection to immigrants for US-Mexico border wall funding
Trump to Modi: How often do you do such big meetings?
New Delhi: US President Donald Trump after seeing the big crowd at the ‘Howdy, Modi!’ event in Houston is believed to have asked Modi how frequently he did such large public meetings, officials aware of their deliberations told ET. Modi, in response, told Trump that on average, one such large public meeting was done by him almost every week and the same was normal in India. “Trump was surprised by this and then asked the PM if he did such regular public meetings while he was in the US too, to which PM Modi said — not regularly — but pointed to his earlier events with the diaspora in Madison Square and San Jose,” an official said. Over 50,000 people had attended the Houston event. Such a crowd strength is unheard of even during US presidential campaigns. On September 24, Trump asked his staff to ensure that a framed photograph presented to him by Prime Minister Modi from the Houston event is “put up in the Oval Office” of the White … [Read more...] about Trump to Modi: How often do you do such big meetings?
In budget, Trump to ask Congress for $8.6 billion for border wall
WASHINGTON - President Donald Trump on Monday will ask the U.S. Congress for an additional $8.6 billion to help pay for the wall he promised to build on the southern border with Mexico to combat illegal immigration and drug trafficking, officials familiar with his 2020 budget request told Reuters. The demand is more than six times what Congress allocated for border projects in each of the past two fiscal years, and 6 percent more than Trump has corralled by invoking emergency powers this year. Democrats, who oppose the wall as unnecessary and immoral, control the U.S. House of Representatives, making it unlikely the Republican president's request will win congressional passage. Republicans control the Senate. The proposal comes on the heels of a bruising battle with Congress over wall funding that resulted in a five-week partial federal government shutdown that ended in January, and could touch off a sequel just ahead of a trifecta of ominous fiscal deadlines looming this fall. … [Read more...] about In budget, Trump to ask Congress for $8.6 billion for border wall
Trump to declare national emergency to build border wall
US President Donald Trump will sign an executive order declaring a national emergency, which will empower him to fund the construction of a massive wall along the US-Mexico border to prevent illegal immigrants from entering the country and curb drug smuggling. The move would help Trump get USD 5.6 billion for the construction of the wall that, he has asserted, is essential for national security. "President Trump will sign the government funding bill, and as he has stated before, he will also take other executive action - including a national emergency - to ensure we stop the national security and humanitarian crisis at the border," White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said in a statement. "The President is once again delivering on his promise to build the wall, protect the border, and secure our great country," she said. The White House statement came soon after Senate Majority leader Mitch McConnell made the move public. "I had an opportunity to speak with President Trump … [Read more...] about Trump to declare national emergency to build border wall
