By Jack Hauen Staff Reporter Fri., Oct. 19, 2018 A 23-year-old Markham man has been charged with impaired driving after a collision early Friday morning, in what York Region police say was their first cannabis-related impaired driving arrest after legalization. The accident took place on Highway 7 near Commerce Valley Dr., just after 2:30 a.m. when an SUV and a tractor trailer collided, causing “significant damage” to both vehicles, police said. The collision closed the highway for nearly five hours. The man is also charged with driving while under suspension, driving at an unlawful hour for a novice driver and driving with no accompanying driver. York Region police spokesperson Andy Pattenden said police believe the man was under the influence of cannabis and potentially other drugs, but that they’re waiting on tests to confirm. He would not elaborate on why police suspect cannabis specifically. “We are urging anyone that has used … [Read more...] about First arrest in York Region for driving while high after pot legalization

WILMINGTON, N.C.: U.S. President Donald Trump is expected on Wednesday to visit North Carolina, which is bearing the brunt of Florence's deadly deluge and where rivers are still rising while thousands of homes and roadways remain submerged.Trump's trip to the state follows criticism for his handling of Hurricane Maria, which devastated Puerto Rico last year, and more recently for disputing the official death toll of 3,000 in the U.S. territory.Trump plans to arrive at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point in Havelock, North Carolina at about 10:30 a.m. local time and return to Washington D.C. at 6:15 p.m., according to the White House.More than 15,000 people remain in shelters and more than 200,000 customers are without power across North Carolina, six days after Florence made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane, according to state officials."We continue to feel the effects of this massive storm," North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper said on Tuesday. It’s already illegal to drive while high. Here’s how Hamilton police plan to deal with the issue after cannabis legalization
By Nicole O’Reilly The Hamilton Spectator Wed., Aug. 15, 2018 Hamilton police are training as many officers “as we can get through the course” to be drug recognition experts in the lead-up to recreational cannabis legalization, says Chief Eric Girt. Yet, despite that push, little is actually changing around how Hamilton police plan to enforce impaired driving — because it’s already illegal to drive high. “One of the pieces of misinformation that I continue to harp on is that it’s always been illegal to drive while you’re impaired by drugs,” Girt said, during a sit-down interview about how the police service is preparing for Oct. 17 legalization. That’s true of illicit drugs, prescription medication and marijuana. Police have always charged people with impaired driving based on the “physical indicia of impairment,” he said. This includes looking for swerving, driving too fast or slow, mounting … [Read more...] about It’s already illegal to drive while high. By MATT STEVENS The New York Times Tues., May 29, 2018 A television anchor and a photojournalist for a broadcast news station in South Carolina died Monday after a tree fell and crushed their sport utility vehicle while they were out covering the severe weather generated by Subtropical Storm Alberto, the authorities and station officials said. The anchor Mike McCormick and the photojournalist Aaron Smeltzer worked for WYFF News 4 based in Greenville, South Carolina, and were about 48 kilometres north of there in North Carolina on Monday afternoon when the authorities say the tree struck their SUV as they drove along Highway 176. When fire personnel arrived around 2:30 p.m. Eastern time, they found the SUV in drive with the engine running, Chief Geoffrey Tennant, of the Fire Department in Tryon, North Carolina, told local news media. Tennant said that McCormick had interviewed him just 10 minutes before the department got a call about the accident. “We had … [Read more...] about Journalists covering Subtropical Storm Alberto killed after tree crushes SUV in North Carolina
Alleged North Carolina incest leads to 4 deaths. One was a baby
By Allyson Chiu The Washington Post Fri., April 13, 2018 Two years ago when Katie Pladl turned 18, like many adopted children, she attempted to find her biological parents. Using social media she succeeded and reconnected with her father Steven Pladl, her mother and her siblings. But the reunion took a turn when Katie Pladl got pregnant with her father’s baby, authorities allege. Arrested in January and charged with incest, the two faced a hearing in Virginia scheduled for April 23. But that is no longer going to happen. Thursday morning, police in Connecticut, North Carolina and New York found themselves at three crime scenes. Among the dead were Steven Pladl, Katie Pladl, and an infant who authorities say was their son. They also found the body of Katie Pladl’s adoptive father, 56-year-old Anthony Fusco, Knightdale, North Carolina, police chief Lawrence Capps said during a news conference. In a 911 call Thursday, Steven Pladl’s mother said her son … [Read more...] about Alleged North Carolina incest leads to 4 deaths. One was a baby
