An Indian Dalai Lama

Tawang is very much a part of India, and if the present Dalai Lama decides one day to take rebirth in Tawang, the Indian government will openly welcome him and support him, notes Claude Arpi. Photograph: Kind courtesy Wikimedia Commons In January 1951, a few months after the invasion of Tibet and sensing a threat from China, the then Assam governor Jairamdas Daulatram ordered a young Naga officer to march to Tawang and start administrating the area. On February 9, 1951, Major Ralengnao (Bob) Khathing, accompanied by 200 troops of the 5 Assam Rifles and 600 porters, arrived in Tawang in the then Kameng Frontier Division of the North East Frontier Agency. A month earlier, Bob had left the foothills on his historic mission. A few days after his arrival, he selected a high-ground near the Tawang monastery for meeting the Dzongpens, the commissioners from Tsona in Tibet and the village elders. China’s plan for inclusive future vital for region

This year, the agenda of the National People's Congress, China's top legislature, includes a critical item that is only discussed once every half a decade, a new five-year plan. The 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25) is bound to be one of the most transformational plans since the founding of the People's Republic of China, as it departs from the emphasis on economic growth and restructuring that was characteristic of past plans to focus on the sustainability of growth and the quality of life. To this end, the 14th Five-Year Plan outlines renewed efforts to close the rural-urban income divide, promote innovation, and move faster toward low-carbon development. These objectives are reinforced by the longer-term perspective ingrained in China's Vision 2035, which lays down the path for China to become a moderately developed country by 2035 and a global leader in innovation. It also foresees domestic demand to be a main driver of future growth under the "dual circulation" development paradigm. ... » Learn More about China’s plan for inclusive future vital for region

Video Player Close BEIJING, March 4 (Xinhua) -- China's development has been advancing in a new historic journey since late 2017, when Chinese President Xi Jinping noted at the 19th Communist Party of China (CPC) National Congress that China's economy was transitioning from a phase of rapid growth to a stage of high-quality development. To forestall and defuse various kinds of risks and proactively address challenges brought by external changes, China needs to focus on taking care of its own matters and improving the quality of development, Xi has said. It is widely believed that this new vision for development, featuring innovative, coordinated, green, open and shared development, benefits not only China, but the world as a whole. Violence against women: Blame our prejudices, NOT the victim

It won't be easy to fight entrenched patriarchy and male-chauvinist prejudice without an extensive campaign of social reform, says Praful Bidwai R ecent violence against women, such as the aggravated sexual assault on a young student in Guwahati in Assam, has deeply shocked the public conscience. Yet it's only one small component of pervasive violence against women -- the fastest rising crime among all cognisable offences registered under the Indian Penal Code. The latest available statistics compiled by the home ministry's National Crime Records Bureau show that between 1953 and 2011, the incidence of rape rose by 873 per cent, or three times faster than all cognisable crimes put together, and three-and-a-half times faster than murder. In India, a woman is raped every 22 minutes, and a bride burnt for dowry every 58 minutes. The police last year registered 42,968 cases of molestation of women -- a figure that's about 80 percent higher than the number of rapes. The weird saint of Mehrauli

Is there a cave in Mehrauli in which Khwaja Khizr dwells sometimes? Friend Baig thinks so – and so do some others. While thumbing through a romantic tale of 1857, one came across this interesting note on the weird saint: “This prophet or saint is one that cannot be identified with any known Bible character, though by some he is supposed to be the same as Elijah. This belief gains colour from the fact that he is reckoned as one of the four prophets who did not meet death. He enjoys the title of Khwaja par excellence as a person of distinction in the sight of his Maker. And he is called ‘Khizr’ because whenever he happened to sit down, the ground became verdant underneath him, the word khizr meaning green in Arabic. Like Iliyas (Elias?), the saint of the woods, Khwaja Khizr is known to live in the waters, and his special function is to take care of travellers, and to relieve the troubles of the faithful. “He was born in the pre-Mosaic age and was seven generations removed from Noah. ... » Learn More about The weird saint of Mehrauli
