We are almost a decade away from the electric vehicle revolution and it’s a nightmare to drive an electric car in India now. The vehicle I had was an SUV, which ideally has the most preferred shapes in the country. But it delivers fewer kilometres to every charge on its bulky weight; thus restricting travel options.I opted for inter-state travel to have the actual driveway experience and took the electric SUV on the weekend to Chandigarh. The Delhi-Chandigarh distance is manageable, but my multiple limitations made it even harder to drive. As I reside on the fourth floor, I have to outsource my charging requirements. So I had to get the vehicle charged at a friend’s house in south Delhi, which added a few extra kilometres to the distance and thus took it beyond the reach of the battery pack. The 272km range just breached the 280-km distance to Chandigarh from this south Delhi address. To cut short my anxiety, I inquired with all the midway dealers to log some additional … [Read more...] about ETAuto Originals: Why won’t India embrace electric vehicles now?

In the wintertime, however, ozone levels increase slightly but are already much lower compared to summer due to a chemical reaction that occurs differently during times of lesser winter sunlight. "Across scenarios, we found the more cars that transitioned to electric power, the better for summertime ozone levels," said Jordan Schnell, a postdoctoral research fellow at Northwestern University. "No matter how the power is generated, the more combustion cars you take off the road, the better the ozone quality," Schnell said. Particulate matter, which is also called "haze," decreased in the wintertime but showed greater variation based on location and how the power was generated. Locations with more coal-fired power in their energy mix, for example, experienced an increase in haze during the summer. Locations with clean energy sources, however, saw drastic reductions in human-caused haze. "We found that in the Midwest, the increased power demands of EV charging in our current energy mix … [Read more...] about Switching to electric vehicles may improve air quality, lower emissions: Study
Venkaiah Naidu Thursday stressed on the need of adopting shared mobility and electric vehicles to meet increasing demands of transportation and said standalone metro systems are not effective as they require a holistic approach. Delivering a keynote address at the launch of 'Electric Mobility Forum' of research organisation WRI India, Naidu also suggested for a comprehensive mobility plan to meet the need of cities for a period of 30-40 years. "Standalone metro systems are not effective and need a holistic approach. Globally, the mobility sector is acquiring new paradigms. Shared mobility, electric vehicles, bicycles, connected vehicles are taking the centre stage and India must also follow the same," he said. The forum, launched by the vice president, is aimed at revolutionising electric mobility in the country and accelerate the transition towards clean electric vehicles. Naidu, citing figures, said it took 70 years to build 60,000 petrol pumps in the country and viewed that building … [Read more...] about Standalone metro systems not effective, need shared mobility and electric vehicles: Naidu
This process takes anywhere between one to five-year period and cannot be shortened, it said in the letter."The scheme is addressing the wrong end of the problem by linking incentives to localisation. Additional supply side incentive/motivation may result more favourably," it said.Pointing out that a 20 per cent cap on ex-showroom price will adversely affect prices of the "affordable segment" bikes, it said this cap can be kept for premium-end bikes to stop misuse of subsidy.Affordable segment is the backbone of the industry to provide a substantial growth in number, which is evident in FAME-1, it added.Observing that keeping the 80-km RPT 80-km range for battery "unnecessarily" adds more batteries that are not required by 90 per cent of the users, the SMEV said more batteries would mean much higher replacement cost and that will be a big deterrent to the prospective buyers. It recommended a range of 60-km, saying it would be more than enough. As per the industry body, the FAME-I had a … [Read more...] about Electric Vehicles body seeks to delink localisation from subsidy incentives
Shell on Thursday has launched a new range of fluids specifically designed to work in battery electric vehicles (EVs). These E-Transmission Fluids, E-Thermal Fluids and E-Greases will make battery EVs perform better and be more efficient. This is part of Shell’s ongoing drive to support electric mobility and offer more and cleaner energy solutions for our customers, the company said in a statement.Mansi Tripathy, Country Head, Shell Lubricants India said, “EVs are the new face of the Indian automotive sector and are crucial to the evolving mobility space. We are proud to innovate new E-Fluid Technologies and collaborate with industry partners towards enabling emission free E-mobility providing accessible fluid solutions for electric vehicles.”According to the company, current lubricants, which have been developed for internal combustion engines, generally fall short of meeting the performance requirements of high-tech EV powertrains.Shell’s E-Fluids have been … [Read more...] about Shell launches e-fluids to optimise electric vehicle performance
