This was a sobering perspective. I have spent half the total period that has elapsed since the birth of the Indian Foreign Service in 1947 in that service, and yet, must confess that I had not thought of our professional history in those terms. As German makes provisions to accept 800,000 refugees this year, the nation is split vertically on the crisis with refugee shelters attacked with Molotov cocktails and swastika signs painted outside many refugee homes. Rashme Sehgal reports for Rediff.com from Heidelberg on how Europe's refugee crisis is playing out in Germany. As Germans get ready to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the unification of East and West Germany in October, the refugee influx into the country could well see its social fabric being ripped apart with Germans living in the east and west taking opposing views on this controversial issue. German Chancellor Angela Merkel has insisted that all the 28 nations who are part of the European Union 'take equal responsibility for refugees seeking asylum,' and Germany is making provisions to allow 800,000 refugees enter its borders this year. So far over 230,000 refugees have sought refuge in the country. The eastern part of Germany has reacted with hostility to this … [Read more...] about 800 plus attacks on refugee shelters in Germany

Chinese tech giant will have equal role with Nokia for equipment upgrade Germany's second-largest mobile phone company Telefonica Deutschland has selected China's tech giant Huawei alongside Finland's Nokia to develop its growing 5G telecoms network. The move by the unit of Spain's Telefonica comes even though Germany has yet to finalize security rules governing 5G equipment suppliers. Huawei and Nokia would play an equal role in supplying Telefonica Deutschland's 5G mobile phone network upgrade, the company said. The deal is subject to the companies being certified by German authorities, it added. "We hope that this window of uncertainty will be as short as possible- we don't yet have certification for any of our vendors," Telefonica Deutschland Chief Executive Markus Haas told reporters. Huawei is a global leader in constructing equipment and infrastructure for ultra-high-speed 5G data networks and its equipment is already embedded in the existing telecoms systems of Britain, Germany … [Read more...] about German firm picks Huawei for 5G rollout
Video PlayerClose SHANGHAI, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- An exhibition on Swiss witnesses surviving the Holocaust during World War II opened at the Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum on Thursday. The exhibition, "The Last Swiss Holocaust Survivors," presents the stories of survivors in Switzerland by displaying their black-and-white portraits and narratives of life experiences with documented videos. It is the first time that the exhibition was put on in China after touring Switzerland, the United States, Germany, Singapore, Albania, Israel and Italy. The accounts of the witnesses in this exhibition keep the memory of Nazi atrocities alive, said Olivier Zehnder, consul general of Switzerland in Shanghai. He said the exhibition can raise public awareness of the dark period in human history. People must realize the urgency in preserving and recording the witnesses' stories. During World War II, tens of thousands of Jewish refugees came to Shanghai from Europe and mostly settled in an area in the … [Read more...] about Exhibition on Swiss Holocaust survivors opens in Shanghai
