Martin Luther King Jr. (all times local): 8:30 p.m. Stevie Wonder has released a video featuring celebrities espousing the need to continue the works of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. on the 50th anniversary of his assassination. Wonder says in the video released online Wednesday night that the teachings of the slain civil rights icon are still alive. Former President Barack Obama, Samuel L. Jackson and Billie Jean King are among the dozens of artists, activists and athletes saying the "dream still lives," and calling for equal rights and peaceful co-existence. At the end of the five-minute video, Wonder asks viewers to post their own dreams online. Wonder was a proponent of creating the King national holiday. The King Center in Atlanta says Wonder in 1980 released the song "Happy Birthday" celebrating King and advocating for the holiday. DAMASCUS: Amira Gharmoush's family has been a victim of both sides of the war for the eastern Ghouta region near Damascus. The 67-year-old Syrian mother of nine is now hoping to piece back together what's left of it.She fled eastern Ghouta four years ago when, she said, one of her three daughters was killed by insurgents in the area, the last major rebel stronghold near Damascus until the Syrian government launched a ferocious campaign to recapture it.Two of her six sons accompanied her on her journey out of eastern Ghouta at the time. Eligible singles who want to buy a resale HDB flat to live near their parents will now be able to enjoy a $10,000 grant. The Straits Times Singles aged 35 and above who choose to buy a resale Housing Board (HDB) flat to live near their parents will now be able to enjoy a grant of $10,000 through a government scheme aimed at encouraging married couples, singles and their parents to live closer together. Previously, the Proximity Housing Grant (PHG) for eligible singles would only apply if they bought a resale flat to live with their parents. This was announced by Finance Minister Heng Swee Keat in his Budget speech on Monday (Feb 19) while sharing other immediate enhancements to the PHG, which first rolled out in August 2015. The PHG was introduced to help extended families live closer together for mutual care and support and has benefited close to 11,000 households as of Dec 31, 2017, or a total grant amount of about $211 million.
