Just a few days after India skipper Virat Kohli spoke about his camaraderie with his deputy Ajinkya Rahane, the latter came out and once again harped on the fact that ‘Virat Kohli is and will continue to be his captain’. Indian vice-captain Rahane was addressing the media on the eve of the second Test against India which will get under way in Chennai on Saturday (February 13). “It is not always possible to have the same sort of energy on the field. The lack of energy sometimes on the field in the first Test was not due to Virat Kohli returning as skipper. Virat Kohli is and will continue to be my captain. Kuch masala nahi milega yahan (You won’t find anything spicy or controversial here),” Rahane said in the virtual media briefing from Chennai on Friday (February 12). India lost the first Test in Chennai by 227 runs after coming back from the high of winning the series in Australia 2-1. Ind vs Eng | India should have prepared a sporting track
Game changers come rare. They go into hibernation for a period of time. Then they roar back, innovating, creating and conjuring magic. These men alter the course of matches, decisively. Rohit Sharma’s stunning 161 on a dusty pitch that offered turn from the first day of the second Test at Chepauk was one such innings. Take away that knock of sheer brilliance from the Indian innings and we might have had a far closer game. His audacious front-footed strokeplay on the devious surface at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium was breathtaking. He trusts his instincts and they proved right. Vexing question Rohit’s innings of dominance notwithstanding — India was 106 for three at lunch and the Mumbaikar was on a scintillating 80 — the vexing question remains. Is India really that desperate for a Test victory — even if a spot in the World Test championship final is at stake — that it needs to prepare this sort of pitch. Truth to tell, it doesn’t reflect much on India’s confidence as a ... » Learn More about Ind vs Eng | India should have prepared a sporting track

The Paliath Achans, a Cochin family that was once richer than the Maharajas
When the Raj was still India’s reality and over a third of the subcontinent sat in the custody of assorted princes and nawabs, there lived in Cochin a middle-class royal family. Its middle-classdom was born partly of choice, and partly due to princely fecundity. On the one hand, the Maharajas were orthodox dignitaries, bound more to ceremonial baths and temple affairs than to self-aggrandizement and ambition — in 1944 a British official sneered that so unimposing was the Maharaja’s residence that a north Indian prince would think twice before using it as his stable. Indeed, much to the admiration of V.P. Menon, who would aid Sardar Patel in the integration of the princely states, Cochin’s ruler was of that rare breed which valued simplicity, cheerfully surrendering his ancestral rights in 1949 with the most unassuming demands. On the other hand, simplicity was also forced upon the royal house due to the sheer number of people on its domestic roster: in 1878 the family included 25 ... » Learn More about The Paliath Achans, a Cochin family that was once richer than the Maharajas
