PUTRAJAYA: With 407 cases, Sarawak overtook Selangor as the state with the highest number of daily Covid-19 infections on Friday (March 19). Selangor tops infections with 577 cases

PETALING JAYA: Selangor continued to record the highest number of Covid-19 infections in the country with 577 cases or almost 43% of the 1,354 new cases detected in the country. Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said this was followed by Sarawak with 178 cases and Penang with 154 cases. He said that 471 cases in Selangor were detected from the active clusters and from the screening of close contacts. Altogether, Malaysia has a cumulative case total of 323,763. Dr Noor Hisham also said that within the same 24-hour period, there were four fatalities, bringing the total death toll to 1,210. The deceased who were all citizens – aged between 27 and 87 – and had a history of comorbidities such as diabetes and high blood pressure. “The 27-year-old who died suffered from leukaemia, ” he added. Covid-19: Two clusters detected at Immigration depots in Penang and KL

PUTRAJAYA: Two Covid-19 outbreaks have been detected in Penang and Kuala Lumpur involving detainees at immigration depots. Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the infection cluster detected at the Juru Immigration detention centre in Penang had 167 confirmed cases. "The positive cases under this cluster were discovered from a targeted screening exercise conducted on detainees at the detention centre since March 9. "So far, 393 individuals have been screened and 167 of them tested positive for the virus," he said in his daily Covid-19 press updates on Friday (March 19). At the Jalan Duta immigration depot in Kuala Lumpur, four immigration detainees tested positive from a Covid-19 screening conducted on them before they were deported home. Sarawak records 407 daily cases, the highest in the country

PUTRAJAYA: Covid-19 cases in Malaysia saw a slight rise, with Sarawak recording its highest ever daily figure since the pandemic began, overtaking Selangor in daily figures. Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the country registered 1,576 new cases yesterday – compared to 1,213 on Thursday and 1,219 on Wednesday. “Sarawak reported 407 new cases or 25% of the country’s cases, the highest out of all states. “Out of its total cases, 382 or 93.9% were uncovered from clusters and contact tracing activities conducted in the field, ” said Dr Noor Hisham in his daily Covid-19 statement yesterday. Four new judges appointed to Court of Appeal

KUALA LUMPUR: The Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, has presented the instruments of appointment to four judges of the Court of Appeal at the Istana Negara. The judges are Datuk Ghazali Cha, Datuk Seri Mariana Yahya, Datuk See Mee Chun, and Datuk Hashim Hamzah. Chief Justice Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat, Court of Appeal President Tan Sri Rohana Yusuf, Chief Judge of Malaya Tan Sri Azahar Mohamed as well as Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak Datuk Abang Iskandar Abang Hashim were present at the ceremony. Company contributes mattresses and essential items to flood-hit families

Cuckoo International (M) Sdn Bhd is reaching out to families in Pahang who are rebuilding their lives following the floods early this year. The company, as part of its “Cuckoo Love, Care Project” community outreach programme, donated 100 refurbished mattresses and 300 boxes of essential items to the flood victims. Govt ready to discuss entertainment tax exemption for cinemas, says Saifuddin

KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama): The government is ready to discuss proposals on the exemption of entertainment tax for cinema operators affected by the Covid-19 outbreak, says Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah. The Communications and Multimedia Minister said although there were complaints and suggestions on the matter from the industry, no official memorandum had been sent to the ministry. According to Saifuddin, the collection of entertainment tax comes under the jurisdiction of the local authorities in their respective states, however, the Federal government is still open to discussion. KUALA LUMPUR: A video has been circulating on social media and WhatsApp showing police personnel helping out during the procession of the chariot in conjunction with Thaipusam. Dang Wangi OCPD Asst Comm Mohamad Zainal Abdullah said police were aware of the video. "Checks revealed that the video was recorded while police where helping to speed up the movement of the statue after the organisers requested their assistance. "This was because only 10 people were allowed to be involved in the movement of the chariot under the SOP listed by the government," he said in a statement on Thursday (Jan 28). He said the video that was recorded at around 3am on Thursday at the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple at Jalan Tun HS Lee here.
