TOKYO - Servers of Square Enix Co.'s popular online game Final Fantasy XIV have been hit by a series of cyberattacks since early October, preventing some users from accessing the service, its publisher said Thursday. The distributed denial of service attacks, in which multiple hacked computers are used to flood the target system, were carried out to an "unprecedented extent" against data centers in Japan, North America and Europe, Square Enix said. The identities of the attackers are not yet known, although information security experts suspect links to cheap online services that carry out so-called DDoS attacks. Two major attacks in early October and late October prevented game players from logging into the service or cut off their connections for up to 20 hours, according to the company. Square Enix has taken steps against the attacks, but the servers were attacked again Tuesday night, disrupting the service for some 50 minutes. FFXIV had previously been subjected to DDoS attacks. SINGAPORE (BLOOMBERG) - Malaysia has finally scrapped three China-backed pipeline projects after halting work on them following the shock elections in May that saw an opposition alliance assuming power for the first time in the country. A finance ministry spokeswoman confirmed that the country has cancelled three China-backed pipeline projects. The Financial Times earlier cited Malaysian Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng saying he had sent a letter to "relevant parties" in Beijing to terminate the planned projects. The plans comprise two oil and gas pipelines that cost more than US$1 billion (S$1.4 billion) each as well as a US$795 million pipeline that would link the state of Malacca to a refinery and petrochemical plant in the state of Johor, the paper reported. Mr Lim did not disclose the cancellation fees Malaysia would incur for cancelling the pipeline projects but said that lawyers were handling the matter, the report said. Since taking office, Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has … [Read more...] about Malaysia finally scraps $4.1b of China-backed pipelines after halting work for months
source Square Enix Back in 2005, Square Enix released “Kingdom Hearts II” for the PlayStation 2. Since then, we’ve gotten spinoffs, smartphone games, prequels, and even high-def remasters – but never a proper, numbered sequel. That all changes on January 29, 2019, when “Kingdom Hearts III” finally releases for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Square Enix used this week’s E3 conference to announce not only that release date, but also a deeper look on this long-awaited game. If you’ve never played a “Kingdom Hearts” game before, here’s the extremely short version. You, as teenage hero Sora, travel from world to world, fighting the forces of capital-D Darkness. The twist is that each of those worlds takes you inside a Disney blockbuster: At E3, Square Enix showed off worlds inspired by “Frozen,” “Tangled,” “Pirates of the Caribbean,” and Pixar classics “Toy … [Read more...] about Fans have been waiting for this crazy Disney and Final Fantasy mashup for over a decade — and we just got a ton more details
Warriors, Cavs vulnerable, or headed for NBA Finals Round 4? Maybe this is the year. Maybe the Golden State Warriors, opening the postseason without Stephen Curry or any momentum, won’t be the best of the West, where there’s a Houston team that can run and gun as well as they do. Maybe the Cleveland Cavaliers, starting from the middle of the pack in the East, just have too big a hill to climb, even with LeBron James carrying them. Or perhaps none of that matters, and the NBA is headed toward Round 4 of its reigning rivalry. The postseason opens Saturday (Sunday in Manila) and it’s far from a guarantee it ends with a record fourth straight NBA Finals matchup between the Warriors and Cavaliers. Neither was the best team in its conference during the regular season — the Cavaliers were only No. 4 in the East — and it’s not hard to envision a Houston to Toronto trip replacing what’s become an annual Oakland, California, … [Read more...] about Warriors, Cavs vulnerable, or headed for NBA Finals Round 4?
