LONDON: British Airways flights were facing delays in and out of London's Heathrow and Gatwick airports on Thursday after a technical glitch overnight, the airline said. "Our teams are working hard to resolve a technical issue which is affecting some of our flights," said a spokeswoman for BA, owned by airlines group IAG. "We have rebooked customers on to alternative flights and offered hotel accommodation where they have been unable to continue their journeys last night. "We are very sorry for the disruption to their travel plans. We plan to operate a full flight schedule today," she added. BA warned that there would be knock-on delays -- but declined to comment on the nature of the problem nor the number of flights affected. "This is the latest in a long line of British Airways technical glitches causing delays and cancellations," said Rory Boland, editor of consumer magazine Which? Travel. "Yet again it's thousands of passengers who are paying the price -- left tired, … [Read more...] about British Airways says flights hit by glitch

The selection gives a boost to the US engine firm, which lost out to rival manufacturer CFM International for IndiGo's 280 aircraft engine order in June. GoAir has chosen Pratt & Whitney (P&W) engines to power the second set of 72 Airbus A320neo aircraft it ordered in 2016. The selection gives a boost to the US engine firm, which lost out to rival manufacturer CFM International for IndiGo's 280 aircraft engine order in June. GoAir has 144 Airbus A320neo planes on order. It selected P&W engines for the first 72 planes, which it ordered in 2011 and has already taken deliveries of 38 planes.GoAir has now opted for P&W engines a second time, as the company offered better commercial terms than CFM International, it is learnt. Deliveries of GoAir's second set of 72 planes are supposed to start by mid-2021. While the P&W engines are resulting in 15 per cent lesser fuel burn, recurring snags led to their early removal and grounding of planes. Network and fleet … [Read more...] about GoAir chooses Pratt & Whitney engines for 2nd lot of 72 Airbus planes

The Chinese air force is now a 400,000 person force that flies some 2,000 combat aircraft -- more than thrice the size of the Indian Air Force. Photograph: Jason Lee/Reuters When Mao Zedong declared the founding of the People's Republic of China in Beijing on October 1, 1949, the country had just 17 military aircraft. Legend has it that this little fleet -- nine fighters, two bombers, three carriers, one communication plane and two trainers -- overflew Tiananmen Square twice each to give the jubilant masses the impression they had an air force. The next month, on November 11, 1949, Mao proclaimed the People's Liberation Army (Air Force) as a separate service. How things have changed! The PLA (AF) is now a 400,000 person force that flies some 2,000 combat aircraft -- more than thrice the size of the Indian Air Force. On November 11, a PLA (AF) video, released to celebrate … [Read more...] about Is India ready to meet Chinese air force threat?
IN NOVEMBER 1980, a few of us were assembled under the leadership of then Air Commodore Prithi Singh, an experienced test pilot, and given some papers to study. These were about the Mirage-2000. We were to evaluate the aircraft in France as a possible counter to Pakistan’s F-16. At the time, we did not have any aircraft that could directly take on an F-16 in air. Soviets were far more secretive and offered the MIG-23MF which was no match against the highly manoeuvrable F-16. The MIG-29 was still unknown at the time. We were pulled out from various places. I was then commanding a squadron and was chosen to be the team’s second test pilot. There were five engineers led by Group Captain I G Krishna. It was the first fly-by-wire combat aircraft, still in prototype stage, that the Indian Air Force would be exposed to. On December 8, 1980, Air Commodore Singh took the first flight and I flew the fifth Mirage-2000 prototype the next day. We flew a few more sorties, thereafter, … [Read more...] about History headline: Mirage-2000 to Rafale, the story in between
