Lowering the boom on era of NFL nicknames
By Sam Farmer Los Angeles Times Sun., Oct. 7, 2018 SEATTLE—The Legion of Boom is over, and that’s a shame. Not because the Seattle Seahawks no longer have a dominating secondary. Those come and go. But because Legion of Boom was the last true vestige of a bygone era, when virtually every NFL team had at least one position group with a cartoonish nickname. (Maybe there are a few others sprinkled throughout the league, but none with Seattle’s renown.) It used to be that players had colourful nicknames, too. And even memorable plays. In sports, the biggest wins can come off the field
By Royson James Star Columnist Sun., Sept. 9, 2018 Sometimes I’m ashamed of myself. Grade school Royson once openly rooted for the boxer Sonny Liston to shut up the caustic Cassius Clay. And when Clay did what he predicted, whipped Liston and then changed his name to Muhammad Ali, and adopted the teachings of the Nation of Islam and the Black Muslims, I sided with the fools who refused to respect his choice. Clay was a perfectly good, respected, Jamaican-type name, I must have thought. Muhammad? Ali? What’s up with that? Black. Muslim? Fortunately, children are resilient. Entrenched self-hatred can be undone. Centuries of Eurocentric indoctrination can be unlearned, if not erased. We can emancipate ourselves from a system that leaves a child, obviously Black, three or four generations removed from West Africa, embracing everything but his ancestral culture. I remember my awakening, in 1964. The heavyweight champion who predicted the round he would … [Read more...] about In sports, the biggest wins can come off the field
