By Marco Chown Oved Investigative Reporter Wed., Nov. 28, 2018 Toronto’s booming real estate market is vulnerable to money laundering because real estate agents aren’t notifying authorities of suspicious property transactions, leading the national anti-money laundering agency, FINTRAC, to step up its audits of the industry. Real estate agents are required by federal law to file “suspicious transaction reports.” From 2013 to 2017, there were more than 2.5 million real estate transactions in Canada, according to the Canadian Real Estate Association. In that same five year period, real estate agents and developers made only 197 suspicious transactions reports. “These reports are critical to the centre’s analytical process and the financial intelligence it generates for police, law enforcement and national security agencies,” writes FINTRAC in its latest annual report. “Because suspicious transaction reports have a … [Read more...] about Toronto real estate is vulnerable to money laundering

By Joe Richer Registrar, Real Estate Council of Ontario Sat., Oct. 20, 2018 I recently met a young lady who offered to help me sell my house. How do I know if she’s a legitimate real estate agent? To be eligible to trade in real estate in Ontario, sales reps, brokers and brokerages must register with the Real Estate Council of Ontario (RECO). As well, sales reps and brokers must be employed by a registered real estate brokerage. The short answer to your question is that you can look up potential candidates using the search tool conveniently located on every page of our website. The search function allows you to search for brokerages, individual salespeople and brokerages, or generate lists of representatives by city. It will tell you if they’re registered with us, and if they have faced any disciplinary action within the last five years. If you don’t see someone and you have spelled the name correctly, they are not registered. Our website has a … [Read more...] about How to find out if a real estate agent is legitimate
By Tess Kalinowski Real Estate Reporter Mon., April 30, 2018 A provincial party that offers hope for overcoming the high cost of housing will have an edge with a generation of highly educated millennials looking for a way out of their parents’ basements and into the housing market, says the Ontario Real Estate Association (OREA). At a time when nearly half the people aged 25 to 34 are living with their parents, 91 per cent of millennials still believe that owning a home is a smart financial investment. But nearly 70 per cent of those in that age bracket said they agree or somewhat agree that buying a home in their neighbourhood is unaffordable, according to OREA research published Monday. It released Nanos telephone poll results to put home ownership on the June 7 provincial election agenda, said CEO Tim Hudak, the former head of the Ontario Progressive Conservative party. The association that represents about 70,000 members, including real estate agents, … [Read more...] about Millenials rank affordable housing among top concerns for upcoming provincial election, real estate study says

By Marc Fisher The Washington Post Sari Horwitz Fri., Feb. 23, 2018 They are the sons of wealth, brought up in families accustomed to power. They were raised to show and demand respect, and they were raised to lead. They rose to positions of enormous authority, the president of the United States and the special counsel chosen to investigate him. They dress more formally than most of those around them; both sport meticulously coiffed hair. They have won unusual loyalty from those who believe in them. They attended elite all-male private schools, were accomplished high school athletes and went on to Ivy League colleges. As young men, each was deeply affected by the death of a man he admired greatly. Yet Robert Swan Mueller III and Donald John Trump, born 22 months apart in New York City, also can seem to come from different planets. One is courtly and crisp, the other blustery and brash. One turned away from the path to greater wealth while the other spent half … [Read more...] about Mueller and Trump: Born to wealth and raised to lead. Then, they made sharply different choices.
