Last week, I was in Iloilo City for several days. Because I didn’t experience any power interruption, I have forgotten that I was in a city which is the subject of a raging war between Panay Electric Co. or PECO, which has been supplying electricity to Ilonggos for 97 years until its franchise expired last Jan. 19, and MORE Power owned by businessman Enrique Razon, which recently secured a congressional franchise to supply power in Iloilo City and three other municipalities. To ensure continued service in the franchise area, PECO was allowed in the interim to continue distributing electricity by the Department of Energy and the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC). But not for long if MORE succeeds in convincing ERC to issue it a certificate of public convenience (CPCN) to engage in the distribution of electricity and if it succeeds in the expropriation proceedings it has filed to take over PECO’s assets used in distributing electricity in Iloilo City. PECO last March 6 filed … [Read more...] about PECO wants ERC to back off

By Sam Schechner WSJ Fri., May 10, 2019 PARIS—The French government plans to give regulators here sweeping power to audit and fine large social-media companies like Facebook Inc. if they don’t adequately remove hateful content—ratcheting up global oversight of Silicon Valley. France intends to introduce laws that would create a “duty of care” for widely used social-media companies, requiring them to moderate hate speech published on their platforms, according to French officials, speaking ahead of a Friday meeting between French President Emmanuel Macron and Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg. Richard Allan, a Facebook vice president, said the proposals were in line with the “kind of models we think will be effective in future.” He said “it’s about the platforms doing the work effectively but being very clearly accountable to a regulator.” The French move accelerates efforts by governments from Berlin … [Read more...] about France steps up global tech scrutiny with social-media policing

With initial registered capital of Bt200 million, the short-term investment plans for Thai Digital Energy Development include decentralised distribution in the renewable energy business and digital business for the energy industry. For 2019, the first project to be undertaken is the 12-megawatt Smart University project with Chiang Mai University. Khemmarat Sartpreecha of Pea Encom said the global transformation of the power business from centralised to decentralised, the use of digital technology, and the introduction of innovations such as blockchain in peer-to-peer energy trading, have made PEA realise the need to change along with the trend. With the increasing demand for clean energy at both the global and national levels, and the declining cost of renewable energy production, consumers now have more access to renewable energy. The joint-venture company will promote power production from renewable energy as well as promote digital business through the PEA Hero … [Read more...] about Venture touts clean energy as way to help firms
