Ahmedabad: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday said there should be less burden on consumers and both the Centre and states should talk with each other over reducing taxes on diesel and petrol whose prices have risen sharply in recent times. Asked if the Centre is mulling to reduce cess or other taxes on fuel to give some respite to consumers from high prices of diesel and petrol, she said the question has put her in "dharm-sankat" (dilemma). "No hiding of the fact that the Centre gets revenue from it. Same is the case with states. I agree that there should be less burden on the consumers. "For that, both the Centre and states should talk with each other (for reducing central as well as state taxes on fuel)," she said during an interaction with the students of the Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad (IIMA). Fuel price hike: RBI Governor calls for calibrated unwinding of high indirect taxes on petrol, diesel
New Delhi: Reserve Bank of India governor Shaktikanta Das has called for calibrated unwinding of high indirect taxes on petrol and diesel – in a co-ordinated manner by centre and states to contain the fuel prices. "CPI inflation excluding food and fuel remained elevated at 5.5 per cent in December, due to inflationary impact of rising crude oil prices and high indirect tax rates on petrol and diesel, and pick-up in inflation of key goods and services, particularly in transport and health categories. Proactive supply side measures, particularly in enabling a calibrated unwinding of high indirect taxes on petrol and diesel – in a co-ordinated manner by centre and states – are critical to contain further build-up of cost-pressures in the economy," the RBI minutes of meeting said. Petrol and diesel prices in India have witnessed a sharp increase since the last 12 days, with prices of petrol nearing Rs 91 per litre and Rs 97 per litre in Delhi and Mumbai respectively. Fuel prices increased due to dip in supply: Oil minister Pradhan
Varanasi: Union petroleum minister Dharmendra Pradhan denied predicting when petrol and diesel prices will come down and said pressure is building on oil producing countries to increase production. “No one can predict the rise or fall in petroleum prices. After massive drop in demand during Covid-19 crisis, the oil producing countries had reduced production to 10-12 million barrels in May 2020 from 100 million earlier,” Pradhan said while talking to reporters at circuit house here on Saturday. “When demand started increasing they were asked to increase production and had assured to do so by February. They did not increase production leading to demand-supply imbalance and increase of price,” he added. LPG consumption increases massively in Europe during winter and falls after March-end following which prices are likely to dip, said Pradhan. The cascading effect on other sectors is natural, but the tax component is not being disturbed as the government has to spend Rs ... » Learn More about Fuel prices increased due to dip in supply: Oil minister Pradhan

Kolkata: Pvt hosps to keep vax price low, add infra for new target groups
Kolkata: Private hospitals plan to keep the charge for vaccinating the next priority groups low. From March 1, those above 60 years of age and the 45-plus population with comorbidities are set to receive the shot against Covid-19. Doctors are also worried about the duration of the exercise. Even though guidelines are yet to be issued, private hospitals could be charging a nominal amount to cover the cost of the consumables other than the price of vaccines. Several hospitals are also planning to add a counter to cater to the new groups. The exercise is expected to be a lengthy one as the second round of inoculation of healthcare workers and the first round for other frontline workers are still in progress. “We are going to work out the price as soon as the vaccination guidelines are issued. Since this is a public service exercise, we will charge just for the vaccine and the price of consumables. Arrangements are being made to add a vaccination counter,” said AMRI Hospitals CEO ... » Learn More about Kolkata: Pvt hosps to keep vax price low, add infra for new target groups
