Thai-British Driver Alex Albon Wins 3rd at Formula One Tuscan Grand Prix
Thai-British driver Alex Albon thanked Red Bull for their faith in him after he took his first Formula One podium finish at the Tuscan Grand Prix. The 24-year-old British-born Formula one driver finished third behind the Mercedes drivers at the Ferrari-owned circuit. He became the first Thai on the podium since the championship started in 1950. Albon’s seat has been the subject of some speculation after he traded places with Pierre Gasly last year. With the French driver demoted back to Toro Rosso (now AlphaTauri). Gasly won the Italian Grand Prix at Monza a week ago in a shock result and his form since being demoted. Coupled with Albon having a tough time alongside Max Verstappen, had added to the pressure. “Thanks for sticking with me,” Albon said over the team radio after a race that saw Verstappen retire on the opening lap. “The team has supported me since Day One. It’s really good to get a podium, just to show that I can do it,” he added to Sky Sports television. Decarbonization as a strategy to pursue sustainability, stabilize Earth’s climate
Exactly eight months ago today, this column focused on decarbonization using the Environmental Performance Index (EPI) 2020 as a benchmark. The EPI 2020 posited that countries who exhibited long-standing commitments and carefully constructed programs to protect public health, conserve natural resources, and reduce global emissions, as part of their concerted efforts to decarbonize their economies, achieve the highest level of sustainability. Humanity recognizes that preventing dangerous climate change and its devastating consequences is one of our defining tasks. We have seen and experienced that global emissions have soared by two-thirds in the three decades since international climate talks began. An internationally-recognized scientist once said that limiting global warming to 1.5 degree-Celsius as stipulated in the Paris Climate Agreement scientifically implies complete net decarbonization of the world’s energy and transport systems, industrial production, and land use by the ... » Learn More about Decarbonization as a strategy to pursue sustainability, stabilize Earth’s climate
Pope Francis prays for ‘victims of war’ in north Iraq
Pope Francis releases a white dove near the ruins of the Syriac Catholic Church of the Immaculate Conception, in the Iraqi city of Mosul on Sunday. MOSUL, Iraq: Pope Francis prayed Sunday for "victims of war" in northern Iraq, where the Islamic State group ravaged one of the world's oldest Christian communities until the jihadists' defeat three years ago. With the partially collapsed walls of the centuries-old Al-Tahera (Immaculate Conception) Church behind him, Pope Francis pleaded for Christians in Iraq and the Middle East to stay in their homelands. The 84-year-old pontiff said the "tragic" exodus of Christians from Iraq and the wider region "does incalculable harm not just to the individuals and communities concerned, but also to the society they leave behind". The IS onslaught forced hundreds of thousands of Christians in northern Iraq's Nineveh province to flee. The country's Christian population has shrunk to fewer than 400,000 from around 1.5 million before the US-led ... » Learn More about Pope Francis prays for ‘victims of war’ in north Iraq

Dyip the faith (and drink the Kool-Aid)
The proposed trade that would send scoring machine CJ Perez from Terrafirma Dyip to the San Miguel Beermen in exchange for a bunch of bench players and a first-round draft pick is as fair as Snow White’s skin. In fact, PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial should approve it right away and not even punt it to the trade committee. We should all accept as bible truth when Terrafirma Dyip team governor Bobby Rosales says that trading Perez and his nearly 25 points, 6.8 rebounds and 4.3 assists average per game for Matt Ganuelas-Rosser, Gelo Alolino, Russel Escoto, and a first-round pick is the greatest thing since sliced bread. Personally, me thinks it’s a really balanced trade since Perez could easily morph into the second coming of Christian Standhardinger, who was taken by the SMB franchise in 2018 in exchange for — you guessed it — a bunch of bench players from the Beermen (BTW, I also believe the Leaning Tower of Pisa is straight). Standhardinger had a good rookie year and helped San ... » Learn More about Dyip the faith (and drink the Kool-Aid)

Marawi City’s Hadiya Village: A gift to IDPs
The ongoing massive rehabilitation of Marawi will propel the country’s only Islamic City to rise again, modern and prosperous. To say that it is overwhelming to be an instrument for the realization of other people’s dreams is an understatement. I had that great feeling last Thursday, Feb. 25, when we awarded permanent shelters to 109 families of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Marawi City. Today, these families have houses they can call their own—a dream being pursued by no less than our President Duterte for every Filipino family. A momentous day indeed. Permanent shelters It was the first time that the government, through Task Force Bangon Marawi and its partner agencies, turned over permanent shelters to Marawi IDPs since the massive rehabilitation in this city started. To recall, Daesh-inspired terrorists attempted to seize Marawi City, which led to a five month battle that started in May 2017 and ended in October. Seeing the beneficiaries, who donned their ... » Learn More about Marawi City’s Hadiya Village: A gift to IDPs
The NBA farms: Sunshine for the harvest
People from the sun-drenched Philippines find it hard to fathom that superstar players would leave their teams just to get year-round sunshine. While geography is a factor, there are also market dynamics in play. Players who chose to play in the Southern, coastal cities of California and Florida also have underlying reasons for their choice, and it’s not just the weather. Take the Orlando Magic, which, like the Oklahoma City Thunder, is one of the farm teams in the NBA. The Magic was gifted with two generational big men drafted 12 years apart. Shaquille O’Neal and Dwight Howard brought the Orlando Magic to the NBA Finals only to lose to superior teams. Since they had some degree of success, why did they eventually leave the sunny Florida with no state taxes to head west to California? Inability to build In O’Neal’s case, he chose the Lakers because the Orlando Magic, who had all the advantages in the world in 1996 (no luxury tax yet, full Bird rights — they could’ve offered ... » Learn More about The NBA farms: Sunshine for the harvest
Netflix Steps ups its Game in Thailand as Disney Plus Enters Market
U.S streaming giant Netflix is ramping up its mobile-only subscription plans in Thailand and expanding local content, as arch-rival Disney Plus arrives in the fast-growing market. The world’s biggest video streaming platform by paid customers, Netflix told Reuters more than a million of its nearly 200 million subscribers around the world are in Southeast Asia, home to around 655 million people. But the market is ripe for rapid growth, analysts say, with the Disney+ Hotstar launch in Indonesia next month set to become a key battleground. “What we see in Southeast Asia is that it’s a very mobile-centric market”, Netflix director for product innovation Ajay Arora said in a recent interview. That’s led the company to push cheaper mobile plans and adapt its product to fit lower-end smartphones, Arora said. Southeast Asia is estimated to have generated $600 million in overall subscription music and video revenue in 2019, according to a study by Google, Temasek Holdings and Bain ... » Learn More about Netflix Steps ups its Game in Thailand as Disney Plus Enters Market
