Agriculture crisis one of country’s biggest problems: Nitin Gadkari
NEW DELHI: Agriculture crisis is one of the biggest problems the country is facing at present, and while prices of fertilisers, diesel and electricity are rising, those of food grains are falling sharply, Union minister for road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari said. This, he said, was the reason why farmers were committing suicide. “I am not sure how visible it is, but this is also a concern for the country … the agriculture crisis,” Gadkari, who is also the minister for micro, small and medium enterprises, said at the ETAuto Natural Gas Vehicle Conclave 2019 here on Friday. “The reason behind this is surplus of rice, surplus of wheat and surplus of sugar. Because of this, our agriculture economy is nearing its end,” Gadkari said. Gadkari said the government was focussed on diversification of agriculture into energy and power, and industry must also invest in rural and agricultural sectors to create employment and diversify wealth generation. … [Read more...] about Agriculture crisis one of country’s biggest problems: Nitin Gadkari
Reducing tourism-related emissions key to check climate change impacts on tourism
Venice, one of the most beautiful cities in the world, experienced its worst ever floods since 1966 this year with water rising as high as six metres in its streets and piazzas. Floods have become something of a regular feature in this medieval ‘city of canals’ in recent years as global warming has led to rising sea levels. Tourism figures prominently in this list. For experts, tourism’s contribution to climate change presents a conundrum. It is a key sector employing millions and significantly adding to local and national economies, but it also has significant carbon footprint. Anthony Albanese sounds the alarm on social media giants like Facebook
On cleaning up “fake news” on social media, Mr Albanese touched on the problem he encountered when men’s rights activist Leith Erikson doctored an image from his Facebook page. “What was originally a graphic supporting Australians’ right to protest became a graphic pushing Mr Erikson’s loopy campaign against the Family Court,” he said. Facebook declined to do anything as it was not a breach of its guidelines. “Why do Facebook’s laws of the jungle to trump Australia’s laws of the land?” he went on to say. Algorithms and complacency from social media giants means that people's views are becoming more polarised, often entrenched by fake news that is allowed to run rampant and unchallenged. We need to call this for what it is – a threat to our democratic process. pic.twitter.com/if9KOkYAW5— Anthony Albanese (@AlboMP) December 7, 2019 Mr Albanese also took aim at billionaire Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg for … [Read more...] about Anthony Albanese sounds the alarm on social media giants like Facebook
