Age care sector pleas for funding boost

Smaller, independent operators are hoping Monday's mid year budget outlook will deliver more money for the sector. It's feared up to 15 per cent of providers would be forced to close if their finances don't improve before July. A coalition of aged care charities, including Uniting Care Australia, are calling on the government to put more money into building the aged care workforce. They also want more home care package funding, with Australians facing a 120,000-person wait list. The government should also include community infrastructure strategies in their drought response to help aged care services in rural areas. One operator says the government would be forced to look after thousands of residents if rural aged care homes started to collapse. Fighting for a good cause: Deepika Padukone feted with award by WEF for spreading awareness on mental health

NEW DELHI: Cine star Deepika Padukone, China's popular media personality Jin Xing and two other artists have been selected for Crystal Award by the World Economic Forum (WEF). The award celebrates the achievements of artists and cultural figures whose leadership inspires inclusive and sustainable change. Chicago-based artist Theaster Gates and Australian artist Lynette Wallworth are the two other recipients selected for the award. Padukone would be given the award for her leadership in raising mental health awareness, the WEF said in a release on Friday. "These wonderful cultural leaders are bridge-builders. They connect us to each other, they help us reflect on the human condition and they provide visions of the world that can cut through the limitations of short-term or linear thinking," Hilde Schwab, chairwoman and co-founder of the World Arts Forum, which hosts the awards, said. There is chasm between ideals and implementation of JJ Act: Justice Chandrachud

NEW DELHI: There is a "chasm" between ideals and implementation of the Juvenile Justice Act and an approach focussed on deprivation and poverty was necessary to address the problem of juvenile delinquency as unfortunate circumstances push minors into substance abuse and violence, a Supreme Court Judge said on Saturday. Justice D Y Chandrachud, who was speaking at the National Juvenile Justice Consultation programme held at the Supreme Court here, said it was imperative to acknowledge that children in conflict with law are not just offenders but in many cases are in need of care and protection. "We have amazing legislations but there is a chasm between ideals and implementation of the law... Children often inherit crime. HIV positive pregnant woman in Odisha ‘denied treatment’, delivers stillborn

        In another case of alleged discrimination against HIV positive patients in Odisha, a virus-infected pregnant woman delivered a stillborn after she was refused treatment at a government medical college and hospital in Mayurbhanj district. A 28-year-old HIV positive man from the Keonjhar district had hanged himself after he was allegedly denied treatment by a government hospital in 2018.Wife of Surai Hembram experienced labour pains on December 11 morning following which she was admitted to Rairangpur Sub-Divisional Hospital for a day before being sent to Pandit Raghunath Murmu Medical College and Hospital at Baripada town.However, no doctor or nurse at the medical college and hospital attended her from Thursday morning, said her husband.“She suffered immense pain the entire night. She delivered a stillborn today due to medical negligence.
