Lecturers race to finish syllabus

· January 25, 2021 ·

With colleges resuming in a full-fledged manner, there is confusion among faculty members about how to complete the syllabus as the government has permitted to hire only half of the guest faculty this time. As per the latest order issued by the Collegiate Education Department, colleges are permitted to retain only 50 per cent of the guest faculty till March 2021. Till the previous academic year, around 14,480 guest faculty were working in the state. However, as per the latest order, only 50 per cent of such faculty can be considered based on seniority. Of the 425 government colleges in the state, 7,093 can be appointed as of now which would render half of the guest faculty without jobs. Teachers said that this will hamper work seriously as currently there are 7,000 permanent teachers in the colleges who say that it will be difficult to complete portions by March. This rule has excluded Maharani Arts, Science, Home Science, Government Science and Mandya Autonomous Boy’s … [Read more...] about Lecturers race to finish syllabus

Free parking is not your right

· January 22, 2021 ·

Donald Shoup, a professor in the Department of Urban Planning at UCLA in the U.S., has extensively researched parking, transportation, public finance, and land economics. The author of The High Cost of Free Parking, Shoup recommends that cities should charge fair market prices for on-street parking, spend the revenue to benefit the metered areas, and remove off-street parking requirements (shoupdogg.com). In a 2014 piece in Vox, Shoup argues, among other things, that ‘a parking spot, unlike things we normally consider to be public goods, is finite’. We pay for everything else about our cars — the car itself, the gas, the tires, the insurance. Why should parking be different, he asks. … [Read more...] about Free parking is not your right
