HONG KONG - Office of the Commissioner of the Chinese Foreign Ministry in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) on Tuesday expressed strong disapproval of and firm opposition against US Consul-General Hanscom Smith's article on human rights issues. The spokesperson of the commissioner's office criticized the article, titled "US Commitment to Human Rights in HK is Unwavering" and published on a Hong Kong newspaper, as a serious violation of international law and basic norms governing international relations by openly making unwarranted remarks about and meddling with Hong Kong affairs and China's internal affairs at large. The spokesperson pointed out that what the United States had better do is to hold a mirror up to itself and reflect upon its own human rights problems. The United States "has long turned a blind eye to the deteriorating human rights situation and the widening wealth gap at home, to the prevalent shooting, racial discrimination and xenophobia across … [Read more...] about Commissioner’s office of Chinese foreign ministry slams article by US consul-general in Hong Kong

Taiwan Expresses Support for Hong Kong’s Citizens, Says it May Help if Violence Expands
Taipei (Taiwan): Taiwan's top diplomat says his government stands with Hong Kong citizens pushing for "freedom and democracy," and would help those displaced from the semi-autonomous Chinese city if Beijing intervenes with greater force to quell the protests. Speaking to The Associated Press in Taipei on Tuesday, Foreign Minister Joseph Wu was careful to say his government has no desire to intervene in Hong Kong's internal affairs, and that existing legislation is sufficient to deal with a relatively small number of Hong Kong students or others who seek to reside in Taiwan. But he added that Hong Kong police have already responded with "disproportionate force" to the protests. He said that any intervention by mainland Chinese forces would be "a new level of violence" that would prompt Taiwan to take a different stance toward helping those seeking to leave Hong Kong. "When that happens, Taiwan is going to work with the international community to provide necessary assistance to those … [Read more...] about Taiwan Expresses Support for Hong Kong’s Citizens, Says it May Help if Violence Expands
Anti-China protests: IndiGo to suspend Kolkata-Hong Kong flights from Nov 6
NEW DELHI: Commercially affected by the ongoing anti-China protests in Hong Kong, IndiGo on Tuesday said it will suspend its flights on the Kolkata-Hong Kong route from November 6. The low-cost carrier had started the daily non-stop flights on this route from August 20. The protests in Hong Kong started in June on the issue of an extradition bill, which would have allowed some criminal suspects to be sent for trial in mainland China, and have snowballed into an anti-government movement. "IndiGo has suspended its Kolkata-Hong Kong services from November 6, 2019 due to poor commercial results affected by the ongoing Hong Kong situation," the airline spokesperson said. "We are in the process of evaluating alternate route options between India and Hong Kong and IndiGo will start operations as soon as possible. Affected passengers are being contacted and will be offered refunds or alternate travel arrangements," he added. … [Read more...] about Anti-China protests: IndiGo to suspend Kolkata-Hong Kong flights from Nov 6
Behind Hong Kong’s chaos lie deep-seated social problems
"Seclusion brings no development opportunity for Hong Kong," said economist Lau Pui-King. "Some youngsters don't understand that Hong Kong would be even worse if it is secluded from the Chinese mainland." "To come out of the current economic difficulty, Hong Kong needs to be linked with the Chinese mainland much closer and more effectively," she said. HONG KONG - Kwong loves the pure adrenaline rush he gets when he takes his motorcycle out on the weekends to light up his lackluster life. The 35-year-old lives with his parents in an old and cramped apartment in the New Territories of Hong Kong. He has a girlfriend but is hesitant to get married and start a family. "The rent is so high, and there is no way I can afford an apartment," said Kwong, who earns 15,000 HK dollars ($1,950) a month. Renting a 30-square meter one-bedroom apartment would cost him about two-thirds of his salary. "Future? I don't think much about it, just passing each day as it is," he said. Kwong's words reflect the … [Read more...] about Behind Hong Kong’s chaos lie deep-seated social problems
The U.S. bill on Hong Kong is a political farce
The United States government just officially crowned itself as a shakedown artist. The passage and signing of Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act and Placing Restrictions on Teargas Exports and Crowd-control Technology to Hong Kong Act have gone beyond mere interference in domestic affairs. Maybe U.S. politicians don't realize it, or maybe they just don't care anymore, but this bill has removed all façade that the United States have put up. It isn't designed to protect Hong Kong residents' "freedom" and "human rights" as Congress claims it to be. These two laws are legitimizing the U.S. government's attempt to disrupt the unity of China by deliberately instigating chaos in Hong Kong. Now, their support for violent protesters and riots don't have to be covert. It can be done in broad daylight, with the might of an entire government behind it. It is a calculated attempt to use Hong Kong as a hostage to pin down China's development. The crux of this legislation lies with the … [Read more...] about The U.S. bill on Hong Kong is a political farce
