The government has begun to look at providing quick relief to foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) structured as trusts from the super-rich surcharge, worried about the exit of overseas investors from the capital market and overall sentiment turning negative, said people with knowledge of the matter. This could be by way of a circular, they said.This follows the intervention of the Prime Minister’s Office. One of the options is ringfencing entities registered with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) from the increased surcharge, said the people cited above.The finance ministry was looking at measures to allow FPIs to convert themselves into companies from a trust structure to escape the surcharge. But policymakers are of the view that this would take time and something needed to be done immediately.
