Insider Inc. held its second-ever hackathon — these are some of the top ideas our tech teams came up with
If you were given one week to build something new or innovative that would benefit people or your company, what would you create? Here at Business Insider, our tech team was given that opportunity in our first-ever hack week in December 2016 – and it was such a success that we recently held “Hack Week 2: The Unhackening.” As a way to kick off our hacking, we hold a team meeting to pitch ideas, review some suggestions for projects, and form teams. All participants are then given four days – Monday through Thursday – to work on their passion project, concluding with presentations on Friday. Each participant/team is able to use technologies they prefer, which really allows for creativity and gives everyone a chance to stretch their legs and work on something cool they may not have had time for otherwise. Our first hack week, held last December, was a fun experiment that culminated in the whole team gathering in our building’s … [Read more...] about Insider Inc. held its second-ever hackathon — these are some of the top ideas our tech teams came up with

Singapore central bank head hopes cryptocurrency tech will survive ‘crash’
Singapore’s central bank head said on Monday he hoped the technologies underpinning cryptocurrencies such as blockchain would not be undermined by an eventual crash in the virtual coins. The city-state is among many global central banks voicing concern about potential losses for citizens and money laundering through cryptocurrencies. But it is carrying out extensive research into the distributed ledger technology that underlies bitcoin.“I do hope when the fever has gone away, when the crash has happened, it will not undermine the much deeper, and more meaningful technology associated with digital currencies and blockchain,” Ravi Menon, the managing director of the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), said at a UBS Wealth Insights event in Singapore.South Korea, a crucial source of global demand for cryptocurrencies, said last week it plans to ban cryptocurrency trading, a move that sent bitcoin and other virtual coin prices plummeting. The value of bitcoin surged … [Read more...] about Singapore central bank head hopes cryptocurrency tech will survive ‘crash’
Cheerleader outfits and weird looks: I went to the biggest tech industry conference of the year for the first time, and it’s clear CES still has a woman problem
CES, an annual tech trade show, took place in Las Vegas last week. Despite months of attention paid to sexual harassment and misconduct in the tech world and beyond, the show still featured “booth babes,” scantily clad women working the parties, and zero women giving keynote addresses. The male-dominated show has a lot of work to do in order to become more inclusive for women. I had heard the stories long before I ever attended CES: the “booth babes,” the hordes of men, and the parties where women were asked to dress in suggestive costumes. But I thought things would be different this year. Since the last CES, we’ve seen the rise of the #MeToo movement, which has encouraged women to share their stories of harassment and assault. Men in positions of power at venture capital firms and tech companies have lost their careers over allegations of sexual misconduct and gender bias, and the … [Read more...] about Cheerleader outfits and weird looks: I went to the biggest tech industry conference of the year for the first time, and it’s clear CES still has a woman problem
