REUTERS/Stringer NAIROBI — Tanzania’s new President Samia Suluhu Hassan said Friday the country should unite and avoid pointing fingers after the death of John Magufuli, her COVID-19 skeptic predecessor, urging the east African country to look forward with hope and confidence. Tanzania State House Press/Handout via REUTERS NAIROBI — Tanzania’s first woman president, the calm, measured Samia Suluhu Hassan, brings a striking change of leadership style as a successor to John Magufuli, a brash populist who drew global attention by playing down the threat of the COVID-19 pandemic. Hassan, sworn in on Friday, is regarded as a consensus-builder, a trait that may prove an asset in dealing with the various factions within the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party and security agencies following the announcement of Magufuli’s death. “I don’t speak in a forceful voice, like others,” she told a BBC Swahili interview last year. “But to speak with someone in a way that they understand you, it’s not necessary to shout. South Africa fail to qualify for Cup of Nations finals as Sudan progress
CAPE TOWN: South Africa suffered a major embarrassment on Sunday as a 2-0 defeat by Sudan in Khartoum saw the hosts clinch a place at the Africa Cup of Nations finals at the visitors' expense with first-half goals from Saifeldin Maki and Mohamed Abdel Rahman. Sudan qualified for only the third time in 23 attempts, finishing second in Group C behind Ghana, who won 3-1 at home to Sao Tome e Principe at the same time. It was a major setback for South Africa, who needed at least draw but were defensively undone by their determined hosts. Maki scored from a fifth minute set piece while Rahman’s mazy run down the left ended with an angled shot into the back of the net in the 31st minute. Sudan are the 18th team to book a place at next January’s finals in Cameroon, with the last six berths to be decided in the last round of qualifiers on Monday and Tuesday. Ghana topped the group with 13 points after they beat the island minnows. Stampede killed 45 at mourning for dead Tanzanian president – police
NAIROBI (Reuters) - A stampede at a Tanzanian stadium crushed 45 people to death as mourners paid last respects to late President John Magufuli, police said on Tuesday, many times more than the five fatalities initially announced after the disaster on March 21. Police in the port city of Dar es Salaam, where the stampede occurred, attributed some of the deaths to people being starved of oxygen at the event due to overcrowding. "It is true that 45 people died because of stampedes and failing to get enough air," Lazaro Mambosasa, Dar es Salaam's zonal police commander, told Reuters. Another 37 mourners were injured, he said, adding that they had all been treated in hospital and discharged. Tanzanian media reported that the crush happened when large numbers of mourners sought to force their way into the stadium through unofficial entrance points. Police initially said five people had died, identifying them as members of the same family including a mother and her two ... » Learn More about Stampede killed 45 at mourning for dead Tanzanian president – police
