Health workers attend to person-under-investigation for COVID19 on a public hospital in Manila. MANILA, Philippines — President Rodrigo Duterte warned the public Thursday night to expect more coronavirus-related deaths due to the continuing unavailability of COVID-19 vaccine supply. In his second ‘Talk to the People’ address this week following his video call with Russia Pres. Vladimir Putin, Duterte bared he did not know when the Philippines would get enough COVID-19 vaccines to inoculate all Filipinos. “Itong vaccine na itong pinag-usapan natin ganito, wala sana ito kung mayroong vaccine available. Eh wala. Hanggang ngayon the word ‘unavailable’ is nandiyan. Unavailable because there are not — there’s no sufficient supply to inoculate the world,” Duterte said in a pre-recorded speech aired Thursday. (We won’t be talking about vaccines if supply is readily available. But there is none. Until now, the word is ‘unavailable’. SINGAPORE - As students of all levels returned to school this past week, it was announced that home-based learning (HBL) is here to stay. Education Minister Ong Ye Kung said recently that online learning is set to become routine, suggesting that HBL could be held once a fortnight, for starters. Amid the coronavirus pandemic , HBL was rolled out nationwide after schools shut in April. After the circuit breaker to stem the spread of Covid-19 ended on June 1, most students in primary and secondary schools alternated between being physically in school and HBL, on a weekly basis, for a month. Now that the weekly rotation is over, it is timely to assess what lessons were learnt from the big HBL experiment and its chief benefits that can also be reaped in the physical classroom. Educators interviewed by The Straits Times say virtual and classroom learning are two distinct beasts, but there are useful synergies between the two, which, when combined, could lead to students ... » Learn More about Home-based learning: What have we learnt from the great HBL experiment?
About 96 per cent of all students took part in the month of full home-based learning, said Second Minister for Education Indranee Rajah in Parliament yesterday. "The few who did not participate were largely on medical leave, and those who did not participate persistently were encouraged to return to school," she said, in response to Ms Rahayu Mahzam (Jurong GRC), who asked how schools assessed whether students have the necessary support at home. During this period of full home-based learning, about 3,300 primary school pupils and 700 secondary school students returned to school daily for several reasons, said Ms Indranee. Ms Rahayu had also asked if there were requests from parents for students to attend school, which could not be acceded to. Said Ms Indranee: "Requests from parents for their children to return to school were met, as long as there were genuine needs. "The challenge has in fact been the opposite, where schools invite the student to come back to school, but the ... » Learn More about About 96% of students took part in home-based learning
If you've watched or heard of the Netflix film Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, you'd be familiar with the concept of interactive films — imagine the video version of the hit 1980s Choose Your Own Adventure book series. But the 2018 award-winning movie isn't the first to have viewers make choices for the protagonists. That honour goes to Late Shift, a British crime thriller first screened in 2017 at the Cannes Film Festival and made available on PlayStation, Xbox, Apple TV, and other platforms. Now, it is also the first feature-length interactive film to receive a wide theatrical release, and the film will soon be available in Singapore at Golden Village. The movie's about a student Matt (Joe Sowerbutts) who is kidnapped and sort of forced into doing a heist at an auction house while working the late shift at a car park. I say 'sort of' because some of the decisions you, in the audience, get to decide are whether Matt agrees to do the heist and how big of a percentage cut he'd get in ... » Learn More about We try the new ‘choose-your-own-adventure’ interactive movie theatre experience: How is it better than what we already have?
Several people have been shot in an incident in Indianapolis, police say. WASHINGTON: At least eight people were killed in a shooting in the US city of Indianapolis by a gunman who is believed to have then killed himself, police said. The victims were all found at a Fedex facility near the international airport where the shooting took place late Thursday, police spokeswoman Genae Cook told a news conference, adding several others had been taken to hospital. One man who said he works at the plant told local broadcaster WISH-TV he saw the gunman start shooting and heard more than 10 gunshots. "I saw a man with a sub-machine gun of some sort, an automatic rifle, and he was firing in the open. I immediately ducked down and got scared," Jeremiah Miller said. Cook told reporters officers had responded to an "active shooter incident," adding they believe the gunman died by suicide. She said authorities judged there was no longer an immediate threat to public safety. A Fedex ... » Learn More about Shooting kills 8 in US city of Indianapolis
Charges of attempted sexual assault and indecent exposure against Irish mixed martial arts star Conor McGregor have been dropped because of a lack of evidence, a court in the Corsican city of Bastia announced Thursday. "We had no material evidence to corroborate the complainant's statements, including after the scientific expert input that had been ordered," Bastia prosecutor Arnaud Viornery told AFP. McGregor's lawayer, Emmanuelle Ramond, said: "We welcome this decision because it is in line with what we expected." The accusations against McGregor, known as 'Notorious', came when the Irish fighter was on the French island of Corsica last September preparing for a charity 180km water-bike relay race from Calvi to Monaco. The prosecutor's office in Bastia received a complaint "denouncing acts that could be described as attempted sexual assault and sexual exhibition". McGregor at the time "vigorously denied any accusation of bad behaviour". McGregor is no stranger to ... » Learn More about Sexual assault charges against McGregor in Corsica dropped
The ARQ Builders Lapu-Lapu City Heroes were merely returning the favor to the Siquijor Mystics. According to Rendell Senining, this is the reason why the Heroes played haplessly against the Mystics last Wednesday in the Pilipinas VisMin Super Cup at the Alcantara Civic Center in Alcantara, Cebu. As a consequence, the Lapu-Lapu team looked like it connived with Siquijor in a game-fixing scheme, drawing the ire of many basketball fans on social media. Senining, who was seen shooting his first free throw with his left hand and then uses his right for his second charity attempt, said Iloilo played that way out of frustration and confusion over what the Siquijor team was doing in the game. The 5-foot-10-point guard said the Heroes intentionally missed their free throws and their other shots so the game would be stopped, and not because they were trying to shave points. “When we noticed that they (the Mystics) were disgracing the game with what they were serving us, we thought to ... » Learn More about Senining airs side on game-fixing issue
Xiaomi's Mi 11 is one of the lightest and most compact smartphones to offer top specifications like the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chipset, dynamic 120Hz screen and dual speakers tuned by Harman Kardon, together with a bunch of effects for video recording to make your videos more fun. After using "large" phones for many years, it is nice to hold a "light" phone again. The phone's design, apart from the camera, reminds me of my old Samsung S7 Edge with a curved glass sandwich with metal rims all around the sides. However, the ones on the left and right are narrower than the top and bottom. There is nothing wrong with this design, apart from the downside of having a significantly curved screen, which I find causes mistypes and accidental touches during horizontal use, like gaming. The good thing though is that you can easily adjust how much you want the phone to ignore touches on the edges of the screen to fit your liking. Another downside of being light and thin is that there is less ... » Learn More about Thin and light but also powerful
