AFTER rumourmongers scared the community senseless about Covid-19 cases in Pulau Tikus market in Penang, going there became an episode of fear for me. But it was time to re-stock the fridge, so I cast the fear aside and went anyway, which turned out to be a blessing in disguise. I acquired a freshly caught octopus of nearly 1kg for just RM20. The fishmonger was so friendly and chatty. He taught me how best to turn that octopus into a succulent, tender delicacy. Why did the fishmonger have so much time for me? Because he had no other customers at all. This is the third time in the pandemic that I went looking for bargains in a wet market that got slammed with baseless Covid-19 ‘news’. And it was great. The place was nearly deserted. Physical distancing was a piece of cake. I was treated like a VIP. Every trader greeted me warmly. I paused and chatted with them about their best offerings of the day. The other fabulous stuff I got were wild, deep-sea tiger prawns, so big ... » Learn More about Caught by surprise with low prices

For Azerbaijanis displaced by war, a chance to finally go home
Azerbaijani Ramziya Sharifova, 47, poses during an interview with AFP at her apartment in Baku on April 2, 2021. – AFP BAKU — As a young woman in 1993, Azerbaijani Ramziya Sharifova waded across a river into Iran with her family to escape Armenian forces capturing her village, then watched as they burned it to the ground. Nearly 30 years later, she’s finally planning to go home. The 47-year-old librarian is one of the 750,000 Azerbaijanis who fled the Nagorno-Karabakh region in southwestern Azerbaijan and several surrounding districts in the early 1990s. As the Soviet Union collapsed, ethnic Armenian separatists declared independence for Karabakh and seized control of the region in a brutal war that left tens of thousands dead and forced hundreds of thousands from their homes. Largely dormant for decades, the conflict re-erupted last September. Over six weeks of heavy fighting, Azerbaijan’s forces reclaimed much of the territory the country had lost in the 1990s, including ... » Learn More about For Azerbaijanis displaced by war, a chance to finally go home
Infra funds under 2021 budget open to abuse — Drilon
Senate Minority Leader Franklin Drilon MANILA, Philippines — The multi-billion peso funds for infrastructure projects under the proposed P4.5 trillion national budget for 2021 could be “abused” for the 2022 elections, Senate Minority Franklin Drilon said. This, as a power struggle brews in the House of Representatives fueled by the “disparity” in infrastructure budget allocations in the congressmen’s respective districts. “I would like to attribute good faith but you cannot discount this as part of the preparation for 2022. I have been in Congress long enough that if there’s anything that we should do, [it is to] exercise extra vigilance in what is called the election year budget because that will be the source of favors that those in power will be dispensing,” Drilon said in an interview on ABS-CBN News Channel. “That’s our concern. We’re not saying that it would be used, I don’t want to attribute malice, but certainly it is open to corruption and abuse for the 2022 ... » Learn More about Infra funds under 2021 budget open to abuse — Drilon
