By Donna Korren The Washington Post Mon., Feb. 11, 2019 By the time I was 29, I was advertising manager at Vogue and was leading the magazine’s New York sales team. It was a plum job at Condé Nast, and it put me on a track toward a publisher role. When I left my job, I traded revenue and prestige for time. For me, the payoff was exponential. I didn’t do it for my kids; they would have thrived even if I had maintained my career. I did it for myself, to fulfil my vision of what I wanted my parenting experience to look … [Read more...] about 5 things you should do if you’re taking a break from work to raise children

After Parkland shooting, back to school in Florida means homework, new friends — and armed guards
By Colleen Wright Miami Herald Wed., Aug. 1, 2018 MIAMI—Six-year-old Tyhler Herrera knows exactly where he’ll start school in August. “KIPP Miami,” he’ll proudly tell you. The soon-to-be first grader also knows that going to elementary school means new responsibilities, such as bringing home good grades and doing chores around the house to help out his mother, Jessica Rodriguez. Soon, Tyhler’s mom will have a tougher conversation with officials at his school: Who will be patrolling the campus with a gun? How will they be screened? Are they mentally stable? Director Brad Bird finds his inner Edna mode
Director Brad Bird finds his inner Edna mode MANILA, Philippines — Long ago, before wisecracking superheroes ruled the world like some dysfunctional superfamily, there was The Incredibles. Brad Bird’s 2004 Pixar movie came out before Marvel’s first Iron Man and its resulting avalanche of Hollywood Marvelosity, thus predating — and possibly inspiring — much of the tone of those later superhero gatherings, with its humor, meta awareness of fans and their obsessive demands, and recognition that characters can have both superpowers and very real human vulnerabilities at the same time. Not my words!” the blond-tufted director jokes in a voice prone to cartoony … [Read more...] about Director Brad Bird finds his inner Edna mode
