A year after Thailand’s deadliest mass shooting a victim still gets medical treatment
A year after the deadliest mass shooting in Thailand, where a Royal Thai Army soldier shot and killed 31 people and injured 58, a victim is still being treated. Along with regular doctors appointments and weekly rehabilitation sessions, 27 year old Jirattikarn Nobthai has an upcoming operation to treat his wounds from the shooting last year. The gunman, 32 year old Jakrapanth Thomma, went on a shooting rampage on February 8, 2020 in Nakhon Ratchasima. Many believe the shooting was motivated by a disagreement between Jakrapanth and his commander over a housing sale. Jakrapanth shot and killed his commander and other soldiers at the Surathampithak army camp before going to Korat’s Terminal 21 shopping mall and firing shots at civilians. The gunman was shot and killed by the special forces team called “Hanuman” around 9am the next day after attempts to persuade the Jakrapanth to surrender. The gunman had shot Jirattikarn multiple times while he was helping victims outside the ... » Learn More about A year after Thailand’s deadliest mass shooting a victim still gets medical treatment

LANSING, United States (REUTERS) – As his victims wept in a Michigan courtroom on Wednesday (Jan 24), disgraced long-time USA Gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar was sentenced to up to 175 years in prison for abusing young female gymnasts who were entrusted to his care. “I’ve signed your death warrant,” Ingham County Circuit Court Judge Rosemarie Aquilina told Nassar, following days of accounts from about 160 of his victims. Spectators and victims cried, applauded and embraced as Nassar, 54, wearing a dark blue jailhouse jumpsuit, was led out of the courtroom. Rachael Denhollander, the first woman to publicly accuse him in 2016, shared a hug with Angela Povilaitis, the lead prosecutor. After the sentence decision, the president of Michigan State University, where Nassar also worked, said she was resigning after facing a barrage of criticism for not doing enough to halt the abuse. A year of difficulty provides valuable experience for Malaysia’s MOF to deaL with pandemic impact
KUALA LUMPUR, March 7 (Bernama): Like other countries around the world, Malaysia was not spared the fury of the Covid-19 pandemic and suffered the devastating consequences. With over 310,000 cases of infection nationwide and more than 1,000 deaths, the pandemic, which was first detected in late 2019, also wreaked havoc on the country's economic sector as never seen before. With the kick-start of the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme on Feb 24, recovery seems imminent, which means that not only will the people be able to breath a sigh of relief, the government will get the boost it needs to resuscitate the economy and proceed with its development agenda. According to the Department of Statistics Malaysia, over the course of a year since the onslaught of COVID-19, unemployment increased to 5.3 per cent in May 2020 or the highest ever recorded in a decade and as high as 50 per cent of the people suffered dwindling income and savings following the implementation of the ... » Learn More about A year of difficulty provides valuable experience for Malaysia’s MOF to deaL with pandemic impact
Bank of Ayudhya Anticipates Thai Baht to Surge in New Year
Thailand’s Bank of Ayudhya reports the baht’s value is anticipated to surge past the 30-per-dollar mark next year driven by Thailand’s huge current account surplus and also the US’s ultra-loose monetary policy. The local currency’s value is forecast to hover between 29.50-30.50 baht per US dollar, with an appreciation bias expected throughout every quarter of 2021, said Tak Bunnag, head of global markets group at BAY. The baht is expected to appreciate to 30 baht per dollar in the first quarter before strengthening to 29.75 in the second quarter, according to BAY. The local currency’s value is forecast to strengthen further to 29.50 and 29.25 baht against the greenback in the third and fourth quarters, respectively. “The baht’s value tends to get stronger, but it would not appreciate past 29 baht per dollar and we are not expected to see an appreciation of 7-8% as witnessed in 2019,” said Mr Tak. Despite substantial outflows of net foreign funds seen in Thailand’s capital ... » Learn More about Bank of Ayudhya Anticipates Thai Baht to Surge in New Year
Tengku Zafrul: Worst is behind us, Malaysia will emerge stronger by year-end
KUALA LUMPUR: The systematic roll-out of the National COVID-19 Immunisation Programme and the country’s economic recovery plan that embeds strict adherence to standard operating procedures (SOPs) will be the key to drive Malaysia back on its track, making it stronger by end-2021, Finance Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz said. He said based on the current data, the country’s gross domestic growth has slowly shown signs of recovery since the movement control order (MCO) 1.0 in March 2020. "We have many reasons to believe that the worst is behind us. I am certain that Malaysia will emerge stronger by the end of the year,” he told Bernama. Tengku Zafrul said the economic sectors that were allowed to operate based on strict SOPs covers 93 per cent of the economy during MCO 2.0 and this has resulted to an output loss of RM300 million per day compared with the RM2.4 billion per day during MCO 1.0.
