How social media influence youth
LONDON: Western countries are often seen forcing other nations to accept what they practiced, for example, pertaining to the ideology of communism, capitalism, socialism and the lifestyle of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community. Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said the LGBT lifestyle was a shift in the Westerners’ moral values and they wanted to force that lifestyle on other countries. “We have our own culture and we cannot accept anything that contradicts our culture, our traditions, and our religion. “In addition, Westerners always talk about freedom. That means we are free to reject practices that are unsuitable for us”, he told a media conference here on Monday before concluding his three-day working visit to the United Kingdom. Young Australians and Indonesians are taking up the bilateral cause and becoming the greatest champions of deeper, more meaningful engagement between our neighboring countries. Indonesia’s millennial cohort receives far more media attention than any other generation in the archipelago. With a staggering 63.4 million Indonesians aged between 20 and 35 years, that’s hardly surprising. For youth action in the Indonesia-Australia relationship, it’s a blessing. Australia’s population is far smaller and, amidst the competition for influence in Southeast Asia, Indonesia’s gaze does not often turn south towards Australia. If we look at the bigger picture, there is also a significant cohort of emerging Indonesian leaders. An estimated 49 million Indonesians are currently aged between 10 and 19-years old. Engaging a portion of this generation to genuinely participate in the bilateral relationship will ensure the long-term robustness of youth action and involvement … [Read more...] about Youth action in the bilateral space

THE Housing and Local Government Ministry could table amendments to the Local Government Act 1976 next year to reinstate Local Government Elections. There is much expectation that local councillors will be elected again. Since 1965, Malaysians have been denied of their third vote to elect their local representatives. There are 154 local authorities in Malaysia and the effectiveness of these councils varies. But at some point they have all been open to abuse of power and mismanagement. It is likely that local elections will be introduced in stages. Problems with the local councils include the lack of action over draft amendments to the Petaling Jaya Local Plan’s land status despite findings by a Select Committee on Competency, Accountability and Transparency. The Kuala Lumpur Draft Plan was only gazetted last year after 10 years and cost RM30 million. The decision-making process in local governments need to be restructured to empower its officers to check and balance decisions in … [Read more...] about The third vote next year?
