The Bombay high court has directed Amazon Prime Video to take down a Telugu movie until the makers of the film deleted a scene in which a Mumbai-based actor's photograph was allegedly used without prior permission. Photograph: Abhishek N Chinnappa/Reuters Justice Gautam Patel on Tuesday heard a defamation suit filed by model and actor Sakshi Malik against Venkateshwara Creations Pvt Ltd for allegedly using her photograph without permission in their movie. Malik's advocate Saveena Bedi said the scene showed Malik's photograph, referring to her as a commercial sex worker. 'Simply using another's image, and most especially a private image, without consent is prima facie impermissible, unlawful and entirely illegal. In a given case, it may also be defamatory, depending on the type of use,' the court said in its order. 'The fact that the image has been illicitly used is bad enough. It only makes matters worse when used in a plainly derogatory and demeaning ... » Learn More about HC asks Amazon to remove Telugu film

The Congress posted on its Instagram account some of Rajiv's photographs of Sonia. The post captioned, 'The grace and charm of #SoniaGandhi captured through the lens of #RajivGandhi' featured the United Progressive Alliance chairperson when she was young. While it is difficult to imagine her wearing anything other than her signature cotton saris, in the pictures, Sonia can be seen donning Western outfits. Everything about the snaps, from the perfectly applied lipstick and kajal to the shining long black hair falling over her shoulder, to a small but bright smile, radiates a feeling of happiness, which has been beautifully captured by Rajiv Gandhi. Tech for the aged
Elderly must not be left behind in the digitization era Compared with other countries, China faces a larger aging problem in terms of both size and speed. What's more, the aging of China's population coincides with the new digital revolution. Aging and digitization create a new challenge-an intergenerational digital divide against the backdrop of an aging society. Since digital products and applications have rarely been developed and designed with the elderly in mind, senior citizens have lagged behind in digital literacy. Older people are therefore ill-informed, obstructed and voiceless, which amplifies intergenerational differences in lifestyle and emotional expression, and further exacerbates the estrangement, divide and conflicts between generations. A digital divide refers to an information gap and the trend of further polarization during digitization due to differences in ownership, application and innovation of information and internet technologies between countries, ... » Learn More about Tech for the aged
Levi’s ad featuring Deepika Padukone accused of plagiarism
Deepika Padukone ’s new Levi's ad has run into a major controversy after it was claimed that the backdrop and the set of the ad in question, was identical to the one in Sooni Taraporevala ’s ‘ Yeh Ballet ’. The production designer for the advertisement Rupin Suchak has admitted it to be the case. Take a look at the screenshots below: Rupin claims that he was told by the Levi's ad director Nadia Marquard Otzen to make it that way. He writes, “Yes we did :) in fact that’s what our director wanted so we had to recreate that." Sooni, however, isn't amused. She lashed out against the ad saying that this kind of plagiarism is nothing but intellectual theft. "A couple days ago someone brought this @levis_in ad to my attention. I was shocked to see our Yeh Ballet dance studio set in this ad, because it was conceptualized & created out of a derelict space by @shalzoid (our PD) from scratch and dismantled after our shoot. Basically @nadiaeye (the director of this ad) ... » Learn More about Levi’s ad featuring Deepika Padukone accused of plagiarism
Double act will pay dividends
China's opening-up of its service sector and future status as the world's largest service trading country will boost Sino-US economic and trade ties One of the important preconditions for reconstructing Sino-US economic and trade ties is to objectively assess the economic development trend of both sides. China's evolution in the next five to 10 years to become the largest consumption market in the world will impact Sino-US economic and trade ties. The domestic consumption market is growing rapidly in China. Its total retail sales of consumer goods increased from 15.2 trillion yuan ($2.35 trillion) in 2010 to 40.8 trillion yuan in 2019. By 2025, it could reach between 50 trillion yuan and 55 trillion yuan, which at the 1:6 dollar-renminbi exchange rate converts to $8 trillion to $9 trillion. The gap between Chinese and US consumer markets is narrowing (from $340 billion in 2017 to about $270 billion in 2019). Also, China is ushering in a service-oriented consumer society. Questions to ask about the Bad Bank
Why do we need a bad bank, owned by the banks themselves when there are at least 28 ARCs around, asks Tamal Bandyopadhyay. Illustration: Uttam Ghosh/ Rediff.com The headache over recovery of bad loans will be less for bankers now. The Budget says there will be an asset reconstruction company (ARC) and an asset management company (AMC) to consolidate and take over their large bad loans, manage them and sell them to alternative investment funds and other investors. Why do we create a moral hazard by allowing the banks themselves to own a bad bank when there are at least 28 ARCs around? (One more, to be floated by Yes Bank Ltd, is awaiting the regulatory nod.) Except for a few owned by strong investors, most dont have enough capital to buy such loans. The insolvency law has been slow in the recovery of bad loans for many reasons. Under this law, any default of at least Rs 100,000 could be dealt at the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT), a quasi-judicial body that ... » Learn More about Questions to ask about the Bad Bank
Economic challenges call for cautious approach
Editor's Note: The Chinese economy faces many challenges despite achieving positive growth last year. How can China overcome these challenges and realize sustainable growth in the long run? Three experts share their views on the issue with China Daily. Excerpts follow: Higher-quality growth should be the focus The COVID-19 pandemic dealt a heavy blow to the Chinese and global economies. Yet thanks to China's strict pandemic prevention and control measures and effective fiscal policy, the Chinese economy recovered from the sharp decline in the first quarter of 2020 to achieve 2.3 percent GDP growth for the whole of last year, making China the only major economy to register positive growth. For China, achieving sustainable economic growth remains the main task in 2021, and given the low base, the rate of China's economic growth this year will be significantly higher than in 2020. However, despite the expected macroeconomic boom this year, at the micro level, many households may ... » Learn More about Economic challenges call for cautious approach
China-EU investment deal more vital than FTA
The Comprehensive Agreement on Investment, once inked by the European Union and China, will become an important milestone for the two major economies. To some extent, the CAI, on which the two sides wrapped up negotiations on Dec 30, can be considered more important than a trade agreement for the EU. We (at Deutsche Bank) believe the CAI will likely boost EU investment in China. For EU manufacturers, China's move to further widen market access and remove shareholding limits will likely help create new opportunities and build a level playing field for domestic and foreign investors. Perhaps the service sector can be expected to make even greater progress after the two sides sign the agreement. EU subsidiaries in China accounted for 11 percent of the total manufacturing sales, but only 3 percent of services sales of EU subsidiaries worldwide. By further opening up China's financial and information technology services-as well as promising sectors such as environment and health ... » Learn More about China-EU investment deal more vital than FTA
