Courts getting to grips with Civil Code
How much should a man pay his ex-wife for home chores in their divorce settlement? Well, according to a recent court ruling, the sum is 50,000 yuan ($7,700). Last month, Fangshan District People's Court in Beijing ordered a defendant to pay his ex-wife that amount as compensation for the housework she did during their five-year marriage. It was the first verdict the Fangshan court had made with reference to a new legal provision-compensation for unpaid domestic duties-under the Civil Code, which took effect on Jan 1. According to the code, a spouse is entitled to seek compensation in a divorce if he or she bore greater responsibility for raising children, caring for elderly relatives or assisting their partner's work. Moreover, the courts should decide the amount if the two sides are unable to agree on a figure. Media reports on the landmark ruling generated great public interest, especially after a hashtag was created on Sina Weibo, China's Twitter-like service. Promoting the value of eco-products with ‘green GDP’
The concept “lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets” was written into the report that President Xi Jinping delivered in 2017 at the 19th CPC National Congress, making it an important part of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era. This has clarified the relationship between development and environmental protection—where protecting the ecological environment is protecting productivity and improving the ecological environment is developing productivity. According to the communique of the fifth plenary session of the 19th CPC Central Committee, China should continue to uphold the concept of “lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets,” optimize the layouts of the territorial space, improve supporting policies on ecological functional zones, attach great importance to protecting the ecological environment and providing more quality eco-products, establish a value realization mechanism for eco-products, improve market-based and ... » Learn More about Promoting the value of eco-products with ‘green GDP’
Chinese democracy deserves being well understood
The annual national "two sessions" is a key window into Chinese democracy, and it may be enlightening to gaze at the Chinese model at a time when the world needs to work more closely than ever to tackle common challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic. The fourth sessions of the 13th National People's Congress (NPC) and the 13th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) are scheduled to open on Friday and Thursday, respectively. Unlike legislators in the West who make their careers in politics, deputies to the NPC, China's top legislature, are from all walks of life and work part-time. Of the nearly 3,000 national lawmakers, more than 15 percent are grassroots workers and farmers. The CPPCC, part of the system of multiparty cooperation and political consultation led by the Communist Party of China (CPC), is an important contributor to democratic decision-making and problem-solving. Under the system, the CPC works together with non-Communist ... » Learn More about Chinese democracy deserves being well understood

Curbing financial risks key to sustainability
Although China has largely contained the COVID-19 pandemic at home, it still faces the daunting task of maintaining steady growth in 2021. One way it could do so-and ensure long-term, healthy development of the real economy-is by optimizing financing and eliminating factors that could trigger financial risks. To begin with, China should promote financial reform and opening-up to develop a financial cooperation system that is diversified, and improve the risk prevention and control mechanism without relying too much on the indirect financing system. The development and reform of China's indirect financing system is in line with its long-term social and cultural development, with banks playing the main guiding role in the entire social credit system. Still, China needs to develop a cross-market and cross-sector financial cooperation system to prevent systemic risks in the financial sector that could trigger an inflation crisis forcing the country into the middle-income trap. Due to ... » Learn More about Curbing financial risks key to sustainability

Solution to gender imbalance is gender equality
Editor's note: Shanxi-based expert Wu Xiuming has sparked a heated public debate by proposing that the large number of single men in rural areas be encouraged to "pair with" single women in urban areas. The gender imbalance in urban and rural areas has become a social and demographic problem. Two experts share their views with China Daily's Yao Yuxin on how to address this problem. Excerpts follow: Marriage is a matter of choice for many women That China has a serious gender imbalance is evident from the latest official data released in early 2020, which show that in 2019, there were more than 715 million men compared with 684 million women in the country. But to suggest that the gender imbalance problem can be addressed by "pairing" the single men in rural areas with single women in urban areas is unrealistic, because there is little similarity in the two groups' attitude toward life and thought process. Spurring a reawakening with National Science Day
National Science Day , which fell on February 28, commemorates a path-breaking discovery at the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science, Calcutta in 1928, that came to be known as the Raman Effect . Three more physicists from Calcutta, namely Jagadish Chandra Bose who was C.V. Raman’s senior, Satyendra Nath Bose and Meghnad Saha , both of whom were Raman’s juniors, had by then made major contributions that were globally acclaimed. But Raman’s discovery marks the pinnacle for which he would win the Nobel Prize in physics two years later , making him the most visible face of Indian science. Pursuing scientific truth It seems very thoughtful and rational that our National Science Day celebrates a discovery and not the birthday of its discoverer. Raman, as a person, was not beyond criticism. The circumstances of his exit from Calcutta where he spent his most productive years, the reasons for his relinquishing the post of Director of the Indian Institute of ... » Learn More about Spurring a reawakening with National Science Day
