Consumer prices still declining

The consumer price index (CPI), a gauge of headline inflation, fell 1.17% year-on-year in February, marking the 12th straight monthly decline since March 2020. According to Phusit Ratanakul Sereroengrit, director-general of the Trade Policy and Strategy Office, the decline was largely because of the government measures to reduce the cost of living via electricity and water bills, effective from February to March. In addition, prices of raw food, especially rice, glutinous rice and fresh vegetables, dropped significantly following the increase in supply and relatively low prices compared with the previous year. Other items, except fuel prices, mostly moved in line with supply and demand. Fuel prices increased for the first time in 13 months, owing to higher global oil prices, he said. Core inflation, which strips out volatile energy and food categories, rose by 0.04% year-on-year in February. For the first two months, the CPI fell -0.75% and core inflation was 0.12%. Price spike temporary, consumers assured

MANILA, Philippines — Malacañang on Saturday gave assurance to the public that it was making “immediate interventions” to address the quickening of the inflation rate, which indicates the pace of the rise in prices over a certain period. “We are intensifying efforts to ease inflation through immediate interventions, such as augmenting the supply of meat,” presidential spokesperson Harry Roque Jr. said in a statement, adding that the 4.7-percent inflation rate for February was only a temporary tick. Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Gov. Benjamin Diokno in an online briefing on March 4 said inflation was expected to stay above the target band in the first half of the year but “we are confident that it will taper off in the second half of the year.” The elevated inflation rate remains driven by supply-side factors “and so we thought [that] it does not require monetary response at the moment,” said Diokno, who heads the Monetary Board. Waiver war at WTO over Covid jab IP rights

GENEVA: The World Trade Organization faces calls led by India and South Africa to waive intellectual property (IP) rights for Covid-19 vaccines — a notion fiercely rejected by pharmaceutical giants and their host countries. The WTO will thrash out the divisive issue at its general council meeting on Monday and Tuesday as its new head Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala takes up her post. Some countries see the waiver as a shortcut to ending the novel coronavirus that has hobbled the global economy. The big idea The text proposes a temporary exemption from certain obligations under the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (Trips), so that any country can produce vaccines without worrying about patents. The waiver would also cover “industrial designs, copyright and protection of undisclosed information,” and would last “until widespread vaccination is in place globally, and the majority of the world’s population has developed immunity.” All those in favor ... » Learn More about Waiver war at WTO over Covid jab IP rights

Protests hinder trade at ‘operating’ Mandalay market

U Sat Maung Swe said the centre may be physically open for business but there is no one working due to the ongoing protests in the country. “There is no trading today because members of the association are protesting. Although the wholesale centre is operating, there is no trading inside. There was regular trading in the past few days. There is no one inside today so no trade is being conducted,” he said. The secretary pointed out that the prices of commodities have also been unstable due to the country's political unrest. “There are changes in the prices of the commodities. Prices are unstable because the banks are closed,” he said. Many banks across Myanmar recently suspended their services due to a majority of their staff participating in the civil disobedience movement as a sign of protest against the Tatmadaw's forced transfer of power. Thailand News Today | Southern floods, Face mask fines, Thai Air Asia woes | January 8

Thousands of residents in Songkhla, Yala and Narathiwat, in the very south of Thailand, have been evacuated from their homes due to flash flooding from nearly a week of almost continuous heavy rain. Local authorities say a total of 18,024 households across 19 districts have been impacted. In Yala, the Sai Buri River has burst its banks, flooding homes and farmland. The director of Yala’s Irrigation Project Office says they remain worried about the low-lying areas, adding that the total amount of rainfall to date has broken records set more than a decade ago. Landslides have also been reported but with no report of fatality or injuries. In Songkhla, 2 districts were flooded by rainwater coming down from the mountains, while some residences and farmlands on riverbank areas of Narathiwat were flooded. Further boost for Muhyiddin

PETALING JAYA: Two opposition PKR MPs of Julau, Sarawak and Tebrau, Johor, have quit the party to declare their support for Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and the Perikatan Nasional government. Julau MP Larry Sng Wei Shein and Tebrau MP Steven Choong Shiau Yoon handed over their statutory declarations (SDs) in support of Perikatan to Muhyiddin yesterday at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre and stated that they will be “government-friendly Independents”. This will give Muhyiddin a further boost of two more MPs in support of him in Dewan Rakyat, as the Prime Minister currently is said to hold a very small majority. In a Facebook post, Muhyiddin said Sng – who was the Sarawak state PKR chief – and Choong handed over their SDs stating their support for him as the Prime Minister for the Perikatan government. “The SDs by Sng and Choong were signed and handed over to me after the convening of the Cabinet meeting in conjunction with the first anniversary of ... » Learn More about Further boost for Muhyiddin
