SINGAPORE - Family members of operationally ready national servicemen (NSmen) will have free membership at Safra and HomeTeamNS, with fees waived for second and subsequent dependants. Applicants will not need to pay the administrative fee of $10 for each registration, too, from now till March 31 next year. This new family membership scheme for Safra and HomeTeamNS is aimed at promoting family bonding, said Senior Minister of State for Defence and Safra president Zaqy Mohamad on Saturday (Oct 3). "Especially during this pandemic, where many are probably looking for places to spend family time together... our NSmen can use this opportunity to explore some of the facilities that we have across our Safra clubhouses," Mr Zaqy told the media during a tour of the Safra Yishun clubhouse. Only the first dependant has to pay to be a member. NSmen pay from $80 for a Safra membership, and from $40 for their first dependant. A HomeTeamNS membership fee starts from $50 for the NSmen, and ... » Learn More about Free Safra and HomeTeamNS membership for second and subsequent dependants of NSmen members

Indoor playgrounds back in business: Best deals for families during Covid-19
SINGAPORE - The first time Teddy Liu visited Kiztopia indoor playground in August last year, he was one year old and too young to go down the slides by himself. A year later, on July 30, he was back in action and raring to go, clambering up the toddler play structures again and again. "He likes it a lot," says his stay-at-home mother, Ms Amanda Woon. The Lius had wanted to return to the centre in Marina Square earlier this year, but found themselves stuck at home when the circuit breaker and phase one of reopening shuttered all attractions. They felt assured enough to return after Ms Woon, 30, watched Kiztopia's Facebook video detailing its new hygiene protocol. "They do their due diligence quite well," she says. Indoor playgrounds like Kiztopia have begun to reopen after over four months of closure during the pandemic and operators are cautiously optimistic about business picking up as restrictions are progressively lifted. However, the sudden and extreme ... » Learn More about Indoor playgrounds back in business: Best deals for families during Covid-19
Day 1 of S’pore’s phase 2 reopening: No big rush as dine-in resumes but queues at malls as shops reopen
SINGAPORE - Even though dining in was allowed for the first time in weeks, there was no mad rush for tables at eateries on Friday morning (June 19) as Singapore moved into phase two of its reopening. At the hawker centres at Bukit Timah Market and in Kovan, queues formed in front of popular stalls but most people were opting for takeaways. Small groups of friends, mostly seniors, gathered for chit-chat and coffee in Kovan, but they kept to safe distancing measures and stuck to the five-a-group rule. In phase two, people can meet socially in groups of up to five. This applies to groups who choose to dine in at eateries, which is also allowed now. A woman in her 50s at Bukit Timah Market, who wanted to be known only as Ms Tan, said that she was "quite scared" that the place would be swarming with crowds. "Actually, it's not bad. Since it's pretty quiet, I think I'll have my coffee here before buying food home for my family." The relatively cautious approach on Friday morning ... » Learn More about Day 1 of S’pore’s phase 2 reopening: No big rush as dine-in resumes but queues at malls as shops reopen
Kids climbing the walls
The Lai kids used to do their homework at the dining table, which was placed in the balcony of their condominium apartment. That worked well when they just had paper-based assignments to complete. But when the circuit breaker and home-based learning were announced, their mum, Ms Vivien Teo, 37, decided her primary schoolers needed more space for online learning. Their play area under a loft bed made way for an additional desk, so Caden, nine, and Gerlene, seven, can study there at the same time. Eldest child Valene, 11, also got her own room since she will be entering her teenage years soon. The family lives in a 144 sq m, four-bedroom apartment. "When you're working, you don't have time to think about what you need to do around the home," says Ms Teo, who founded children's furniture company Kids Haven eight years ago. It was only during the circuit breaker that she spent more time at home and took stock of her kids' emergent needs - like how they needed a more conducive ... » Learn More about Kids climbing the walls

SINGAPORE-A new Safra clubhouse to open in Choa Chu Kang in 2022 will offer a "fitness oasis" to more than 90,000 national servicemen (NSmen) and their families who live in north-western Singapore. The groundbreaking event is set to take place late next year (2019) and the development cost is expected to be between $60 million and $70 million. 7th Safra clubhouse to be built in Choa Chu Kang park, Safra members to get deals and treats
SINGAPORE - National servicemen and their families who live in the north-west can look forward to a new Safra clubhouse that will be built in Choa Chu Kang park in the coming years. It will feature a sheltered swimming pool, a skypark running circuit, a gym, as well as a nature-themed playground. This was announced by Second Minister for Defence and Safra president Ong Ye Kung on Sunday (May 28) at a ceremony at Keat Hong Community Centre which commemorated 50 years of National Service (NS) this year. Mr Ong said that Singapore has been able to achieve peace and stability, and the conditions for its society to develop, because potential aggressors know that Singaporeans are "solidly united in defending our country". "In an increasingly complex world plagued with all kinds of of terror such as the recent suicide attacks in Manchester and Jakarta, cyber-attacks, and geopolitical uncertainties, we will continue to have a strong SAF (Singapore Armed Forces) to underpin Singapore's ... » Learn More about 7th Safra clubhouse to be built in Choa Chu Kang park, Safra members to get deals and treats
Credit Suisse overhauls executive board as it estimates Archegos fallout at US$4.7bil
Zurich: Credit Suisse Group AG on Tuesday announced an estimated loss of 4.4 billion Swiss francs ($4.7 billion) from its relationship with Archegos Capital Management LP, suspended a share buyback programme and cut its proposed dividend. The Swiss bank, which has dumped over $2 billion worth of stock to end exposure to the troubled investor, also said its Chief Risk Officer Lara Warner and Brian Chin, the bank's investment banking head, were stepping down. It said Christian Meissner would be appointed chief of the investment bank as of May 1, Joachim Oechslin would be interim chief risk officer and Thomas Grotzer would be interim global head of compliance. "The significant loss in our Prime Services business relating to the failure of a US-based hedge fund is unacceptable," Credit Suisse Chief Executive Thomas Gottstein said in a statement. Thai company steps up to ease condom shortage
A shortage of condoms is one thing. A shortage of condoms while people around the world are stuck at home is another. Since a top condom manufacturer in Malaysia halted production due to the coronavirus pandemic, a Thai company is now stepping up to fill the gap. Thai Nippon Rubber Industry, the country’s biggest condom manufacturer, is increasing production by 27%, according to Nation Thailand. They make the brands ‘Playboy’ and ‘One Touch’ condoms. They plan to sell 1.9 billion condoms this year. Hopefully that’s enough to keep everyone, well, happy. Authorities feared that a shortage of condoms could lead to more potential more serious issues like unwanted pregnancies and the spread of sexual diseases. Last month, the UN Population fund said they could only get half of its usual condom supplies. They say the poorest and most vulnerable would be hit hardest, adding that there could be an increase in unsafe abortions. “A shortage of condoms, or any contraceptive, could lead to ... » Learn More about Thai company steps up to ease condom shortage

One killed in East Java’s magnitude 5.9 quake
A magnitude 5.9 earthquake off Java island on Saturday killed one person and damaged buildings in several cities, media reports said. The quake was felt in cities and towns across East Java, home to 40.7 million people, and nearby provinces, including the resort island of Bali, Indonesian media reported. One person died in Lumajang after being hit by a falling boulder, news website detik.com said, citing a town disaster official. There had been aftershocks but there was no risk of tsunami, Indonesian geophysics agency BMKG said. Reports of damage included parliamentary buildings, a school, a hospital and houses in several cities, while a large gorilla statue in an amusement park in the town of Batu lost its head. The national disaster agency said authorities were still taking stock of the damage. The quake struck in the Indian Ocean 91 km (57 miles) off the southern coast of East Java.
