Jakarta. A tsunami killed at least 281 people and injured more than a thousand on the islands of Java and Sumatra following an underwater landslide believed to have been caused by an eruption of the Anak Krakatau volcano, officials said. Indonesia sits on the geologically active Pacific Ring of Fire and is regularly hit by earthquakes. Here are some of the major quakes and tsunamis that have struck the country in recent years: 2004: A massive magnitude-9.1 quake on the western coast of Aceh Province in northern Sumatra on Dec. 26 triggered a tsunami that struck 14 countries, killing 226,000 people along the Indian Ocean coastline, more than half of them in Aceh. 2005: A series of strong quakes hit the western coast of Sumatra in late March and early April. Hundreds died on Nias Island, off the coast of Sumatra. 2006: A shallow quake rocked the area around Yogyakarta, killing at least 5,500 and destroying or damaging 150,000 homes. 2006: A magnitude-6.8 quake hit south of Java, … [Read more...] about These Were Indonesia’s Biggest Earthquakes and Tsunamis Since 2004

By The Associated Press Fri., Sept. 28, 2018 JAKARTA, INDONESIA—Powerful earthquakes jolted the Indonesian island of Sulawesi on Friday, destroying houses and killing at least one person. An official said widespread damage was expected and urged people to stay outdoors because of the danger of strong aftershocks. The U.S. Geological Survey said the strongest quake had a magnitude of 7.5 and was centred at a depth of 6 miles (10 kilometres) about 35 miles (56 kilometres) northeast of the central Sulawesi town of Donggala. It briefly triggered a tsunami warning. An official with the local disaster agency, Akris, said “many houses have collapsed.” “It happened while we still have difficulties in collecting data from nine villages affected by the first quake,” he told The Associated Press. “People ran out in panic.” Television footage showed people running into the streets. Woman and children wailed hysterically in a video … [Read more...] about Powerful quakes rock Sulawesi in Indonesia, destroying homes

Lebak, Banten, was rocked by its third earthquake of the year on July 7. Even though it was smaller than the ones that occurred on Jan. 23 (6.4-magnitude) and in March (5.2-magnitude), the 4.4-magnitude earthquake damaged three houses in Sukabumi, West Java. Lebak is 153 kilometers away from Jakarta but the tremor in January was felt in the metropolis, sending those working in high-rise buildings into a panic. The 5.2-magnitude quake that happened in March was hardly felt by many. The Lebak earthquakes prompted experts to hold a seminar in late February in Jakarta titled 8.7 Magnitude Megathrust Earthquake – Is Jakarta Ready? The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) presented a paper at the seminar that talked about Jakarta’s vulnerability to earthquakes as the city is surrounded by active fault lines. An inspection on high-rise buildings across the city began in March to ensure readiness in case another, bigger earthquake hits. The city … [Read more...] about Third earthquake in 2018 in Lebak: Is Jakarta ready for megathrust quake?
