Living in the land of ‘Twisted’ BRIEF HISTORIES - Don Jaucian (The Philippine Star) - October 20, 2018 - 12:00am In one of my copies of Jessica Zafra’s Twisted books, I find one of my business cards from four years ago. “Editorial assistant,” the title reads under my name, the lowest rung in the publishing ladder. The book, Twisted 8 1/2 is eight years old. It is a slim volume of essays about gadgets, technology, and other Just Jessica Zafra Things™, topics familiar to any reader who’s followed her career since she first published her column in 1994. Twisted 8 1/2 also happens to be one of the first books I’ve written about professionally. My review was published in a youth culture magazine that now only exists online. It was a full circle of sorts, my writing about Zafra’s still charming post-’90s neuroticism (I also used the words “rife” and … [Read more...] about Living in the land of ‘Twisted’

Would the founders of Pinoy journalism and media be proud of us today? In this age of digital and social media, Filipino-Spanish historian Mr. Jaime Marco and Palanca award winner Dr. Jose Victor Torres, together with Vibal, released a book about the history of Pinoy journalism entitled "El Periodismo Filipino". I had a chat with Jaime Marco about his new project. The last time we talked about history was when I featured him in 2012 when I visited Madrid, Spain to document the different historical markers of the Rizal walking tour which he founded there. El Periodismo Filipino The book has been released and is available thru shop.vibalgroup.com. El Periodismo Filipino contains important documents from Spanish scholar and critic Wenceslao E. Retana. It documents a century of journalistic endeavors that capture the struggle of Filipinos to express themselves freely and independently during the reform movement of the 1800s. According to Marco, Retana's … [Read more...] about News OPINION: An enlightening book on the founding of Pinoy journalism
The term “beauty influencer” might sound familiar to those active on social media. A beauty influencer is defined as someone who shares their opinions on various beauty products. Consciously or not, these beauty influencers have more or less contributed to shaping our judgement on our choice of beauty products. Why do we trust beauty influencers in the first place? Why do we listen and read their reviews? Why does it matter? Until the 18th century, the notion of beauty was dominated by Plato and Aristotle, who saw beauty as something objective. They emphasised beauty as a matter of specific proportions or relations among parts. It was not something that came from the response of the beholder. Then, the concept of beauty experienced a shift. Beauty was seen in a more subjective state. In a sense, the definition of beauty laid on the set of standards generated by the perceiver in his/her own mind. As David Hume asserted in “Of the Standard of Taste” in 1757, … [Read more...] about Why do we trust ‘beauty influencers’?
By Vinay Menon Entertainment Columnist Fri., March 16, 2018 Jordan B. Peterson is on a journey into the unknown. But at this moment, as he ambles into his sun-drenched living room, he first needs to get through the next agenda item in a daily schedule that is snapped together like a jigsaw puzzle by a team of handlers. “How long are we going to talk?” he asks, as solicitously as Mister Rogers. When I tell him I booked two hours with the gatekeepers, horror dances in his eyes, as if I just casually asked for one of his kidneys. But he nods gamely and rubs the back of his neck. His slender body folds up like an origami crane as he settles into a leather recliner and swivels into gabbing position. Get comfy, Professor. There is much to discuss. Article Continued Below Driving in that morning, I find myself thinking about Peterson’s neighbours in Seaton Village. What must they make of this epic transformation? A few years ago, Peterson was a … [Read more...] about Jordan Peterson is trying to make sense of the world — including his own strange journey
source Randi Zuckerberg Randi Zuckerberg has authored four books, started her own media company, run multiple television shows, and performed on Broadway. She might even be eyeing her own talk show. The eldest Zuckerberg has long been a vivacious personality in Silicon Valley, where she’s lampooned the tech industry’s hermetic culture and spoken out against the detriments of social media. But she is the first to admit that her career has long been overshadowed by that of her younger brother, Mark, who is the founder and CEO of Facebook. “Every article written about me now refers to me as Randi Zuckerberg, Mark’s sister,” she once told the New York Times. “Maybe one day that won’t be what people say about me.” Randi’s career began as one of the first Facebook employees, but since leaving the company after a colorful six-year stint, she’s forged her own path. And she’s never hesitated to express her … [Read more...] about Everything you need to know about Randi Zuckerberg, the ex-Facebook employee and media mogul who hates being referred to as ‘Mark’s sister’
