New Delhi: In ABP News’ VIP Exit Poll, former cricketer and BJP candidate Gautam Gambhir is seen struggling to clinch the East Delhi Lok Sabha seat. However, the exit poll has also found that he still holds the edge in the prestigious battle against AAP’s Atishi and Congress Arvinder Singh Lovely. According to the Exit Poll, Gambhir may face a neck-and-neck battle with Lovely for the first spot. The ABP News-Nielsen Exit Poll aired on Sunday showed the BJP winning five out of the 7 seats in the national capital. AAP and Congress were seen getting a seat each. The blockbuster battle for the East Delhi seat was murkier during the entire political campaigning with AAP’s Atishi alleging that a pamphlet containing "obscene and derogatory" remarks against her was allegedly distributed in the constituency by her rival Gambhir. After rolling out the National Register of Citizens in Assam, the BJP-led government at the Centre has said it will conduct a similar exercise in the rest of the country. Political Studies professor Sanjib Baruah and Supreme Court senior advocate Colin Gonsalves examine the implications of such an exercise in a conversation moderated by Abdus Salam. Edited excerpts:What’s your verdict on the NRC exercise in Assam? Would you categorise it as one that met its objectives?Sanjib Baruah: Of course not. It was an unprecedented bureaucratic exercise, which has a particular history. But the fact that in a democracy 1.9 million people are excluded from it can’t be a simple matter. Even if it is a transparent and technology-driven process, as [NRC State Coordinator] Prateek Hajela puts it, the people who are excluded are mostly the poor. The idea that in a country like India, you can bring in everybody into a documentary regime of the state is a far-fetched one. “I used to draw a lot of weird stuff as a child… skeletons, monsters, and demons destroying cities. My parents were worried. They were like what is wrong with this child,” laughs 32-year-old Gaurav Basu, visual artist and vocalist for Bengaluru-based thrash/death metal band Inner Sanctum. Gaurav, who goes by the moniker Acid Toad, will be among the artists participating in the Bengaluru edition of Comic Con this weekend. The origins of the name, Acid Toad, which he started using in 2012, lie in Gaurav’s penchant for the bizarre. “The two words, acid and toad, don’t generally go together but they could mean anything. For example, the psychedelic South American poisonous toads. Along with comic art, I was also influenced by a lot of 70s psychedelia and the psychedelic art from those bands. It just fell into place. One day, I was drawing toads and when I looked at it, the form felt right and the name felt right.“Even when I came up with the name, … [Read more...] about Catch visual artist Gaurav Basu aka Acid Toad at Comic Con
At the junction of Qingshuihe county in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region and Pianguan county in North China's Shanxi province, there's a place where the Great Wall meets the Yellow River: Laoniuwan village, which has a history over 500 years. The barren soil at this village reflected a widespread saying -- "no harvest for nine years out of 10". Lyu Chenggui, born in 1965, is a native of Laoniuwan. In 2009, Lyu saw a future in developing tourism in his hometown and returned to Laoniuwan as the new secretary of the village Party branch. He led villagers to demolish dilapidated houses, afforest the village, open rural entertainment areas and learn business and service skills. Through a decade of hard work, Laoniuwan villagers have given up simply being farmers and moved to a new village 1.6 kilometers away. Their original loess cave dwellings were transformed into rural entertainment areas. Today, Laoniuwan has become a place where tourists can explore unknowns in an ancient world. … [Read more...] about Yellow River village sees revitalization
