Shining into the future

When was the last time you upgraded your desk light? Want to go all in on the smart home route? This Dyson "smart" light that can last 60 years may be the light that's right for you. Previously, my desk housed a typical bendable light with minor colour adjustments that I thought that was adequate for everything I needed to do at my desk. Never did I think a desk light could be "smart", nor did I know a fully customisable colour temperature of light to be something that will affect productivity and reduce eye strain until I used the Dyson Lightcycle Morph desk light. My thoughts changed after two months as I got used to moving the light to my area of focus and adjusting the yellow tint of the colour temperature and brightness to fit my mood. I also could turn the lamp off from the comfort of my bed by using a phone app. This smart light's motion sensors will turn the lamp on automatically when you enter the room and turn off when you leave the area. However, I found this ... » Learn More about Shining into the future

Army to battle pad kaphrao; Abhist warns PM over amendment; Big three to reduce prices

PHUKET MEDIA WATCH – Thailand news compiled by Gazette editors for Phuket’s international community Thai Army ready: We shall fight them in the kitchens Phuket Gazette PHUKET: The Royal Thai Army has declared war on pad kaphrao . A sign banning the spicy stir-fried basil dish has appeared in the canteen at the Office of the Army Secretary in Bangkok. Evidently senior officers disliked the odor created by all that garlic and chilli commingling with basil. Complaints had been filed against the canteen about the smell, so staff tried to fix ventilation hoods over the food stalls that were making the pad kaphrao . It didn’t help – the odor was still wafting into officers’ quarters. The only answer was to reassign the dish to an inactive post. “If you want pad kaphrao you can go have it somewhere else,” Army Chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha said. On the social media, there was speculation that kaphrao is now categorized as a chemical weapon, and laments over the Thai ... » Learn More about Army to battle pad kaphrao; Abhist warns PM over amendment; Big three to reduce prices

3 protesters killed in Myanmar; shops and factories closed as workers go on strike

YANGON: Three protesters were killed in Myanmar on Monday (Mar 8), witnesses said, as demonstrators across the country sought to paralyse the economy with strike action following a weekend of night raids and arrests. Shops, factories and banks were closed in the main city of Yangon. Photos posted on Facebook showed the bodies of two men lying on the street in the northern town of Myitkyina. Witnesses said they were taking part in a protest when police fired stun grenades and tear gas. Several people were then hit by gunfire from buildings nearby. One witness, who said he helped move the bodies, told Reuters two people were shot in the head and died on the spot. Three people were injured. "How inhumane to kill unarmed civilians," said the witness, a 20-year-old man. "We must have our right to protest peacefully." It was not immediately clear who fired on the protesters although both police and the military were at the protest, the witnesses said. Ex-USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar sentenced to 175 years for sexual abuse of young athletes

LANSING, United States (REUTERS) – As his victims wept in a Michigan courtroom on Wednesday (Jan 24), disgraced long-time USA Gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar was sentenced to up to 175 years in prison for abusing young female gymnasts who were entrusted to his care. “I’ve signed your death warrant,” Ingham County Circuit Court Judge Rosemarie Aquilina told Nassar, following days of accounts from about 160 of his victims. Spectators and victims cried, applauded and embraced as Nassar, 54, wearing a dark blue jailhouse jumpsuit, was led out of the courtroom. Rachael Denhollander, the first woman to publicly accuse him in 2016, shared a hug with Angela Povilaitis, the lead prosecutor. After the sentence decision, the president of Michigan State University, where Nassar also worked, said she was resigning after facing a barrage of criticism for not doing enough to halt the abuse. SINGAPORE: More than 150,000 teachers and other workers in the education sector will be offered COVID-19 vaccinations from Wednesday (Mar 10). The exercise is in line with the Ministry of Health's (MOH) efforts to extend vaccination to workers who offer essential services, said the Ministry of Education (MOE), the Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF) and the Early Childhood Development Agency (ECDA). "It complements existing efforts to keep our educational institutions safe, as children and the majority of our students are not yet medically eligible for vaccination," they said in a joint news release. Minneapolis trial in George Floyd death starts with weeks of painstaking jury selection

People gather during a demonstration in honor of George Floyd on March 7, 2021 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Jury selection in the trial of former Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin, who is accused of killing Floyd, starts on Monday, March 8. Stephen Maturen/Getty Images/AFP (Photo by Stephen Maturen / GETTY IMAGES NORTH AMERICA / Getty Images via AFP) MINNEAPOLIS — The trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin for the death of George Floyd was due to begin on Monday with the screening of jurors to weigh murder and manslaughter charges in a case seen as a referendum on police violence against Black Americans. The judge has set aside three weeks for jury selection alone, mindful of the difficulties finding impartial Minneapolitans in a case that has convulsed a nation and in which an image of the victim — a selfie of Floyd faintly smiling — has fast become an international icon of racial justice. The court mailed prospective jurors an unusually detailed 16-page ... » Learn More about Minneapolis trial in George Floyd death starts with weeks of painstaking jury selection
