Despite having dealt with transiting refugees for nearly 45 years, Indonesia is still unable to properly address the problem. Between 1975 and 1995, the archipelago hosted more than 120,000 refugees fleeing political unrest in Indochina. The refugees hoped to stay in Indonesia, but the government had no intention of integrating them into the country. They came in large groups and were granted refugee status through an expedited process known as "prima facie." Indonesia also accommodated them on Galang Island in Riau Islands Province, entrusting the military with their care. In the mid-1990s, Indonesia hosted a smaller number of refugees and asylum seekers from Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq and other conflict-ridden Middle Eastern countries. For these migrants, Indonesia was only a staging post on the journey to their intended destination, such as Australia. Indonesian immigration personnel, who often did not know the difference between an asylum seeker and a refugee, … [Read more...] about Indonesia Must Revisit Its Handling of Refugees

SINGAPORE: As Singapore’s outlook darkens with growth cooling to levels last seen a decade ago, there could be more retrenchments and fewer job vacancies ahead, said economists. The job losses will likely come from outward-oriented sectors, which have been hit by a protracted trade spat between the United States and China.Already for the first quarter, data from the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) showed an increase in retrenchments – from 2,510 in the previous quarter to 3,230 – on the back of a near three-fold jump in job losses in the manufacturing sector. The economy grew 1.1 per cent year-on-year during the first quarter but amid falling factory activity and exports, growth in the second quarter slowed sharply to a decade-low 0.1 per cent on a year-on-year basis based on recent flash estimates.DBS senior economist Irvin Seah said it is “pretty clear that the outlook for the labour market isn’t going to be great” given the “drastic” growth … [Read more...] about What Singapore’s slowing GDP growth means for the jobs market
Bato sorry for 'shit happens' remark, says it again anyway Patricia Lourdes Viray (Philstar.com) - July 8, 2019 - 10:35am MANILA, Philippines — Sen. Ronald "Bato" dela Rosa, former chief of the Philippine National Police, clarified that he made the wrong choice of words when he commented on the death of a three-year-old girl in a drug bust operation. Last week, the neophyte senator said "shit happens" when asked about the demise of the girl, which drew criticism from rights groups. "I will recall my word. Instead of 'shit' let us change it to 'unfortunate incident' (happens)," Dela Rosa told ANC' "Headstart" Monday. 'Shit happens' comment should not have been public Dela Rosa said that he had apologized to the family of the victim following his remarks, adding that his comment should have only been for the police community and not the general public, more than 19 million of whom voted for him in the May … [Read more...] about Bato sorry for ‘shit happens’ remark, says it again anyway
Recycling is struggling in much of the United States, and companies like Coca-Cola say they are committed to fixing it. The beverage industry helps pay for pizza parties celebrating top elementary school recyclers and lends money to companies that process used plastic. Coca-Cola and Pepsi, along with Dow, the plastics producer, support nonprofit groups like Keep America Beautiful, which organize events like litter cleanups. A recent video funded partly by Keep America Beautiful featured models dancing through a recycling facility in Brooklyn, which one advertising writer said makes “recycling sexy.” By 2030, Coca-Cola wants all of its packaging to be made from at least 50 percent recycled content. But one approach to recycling that many of these companies do not support has proved to actually work: container deposit laws, more commonly known as bottle bills, which cost them lots of money. In the 10 states where consumers can collect a few cents when they return an empty … [Read more...] about Beverage companies embrace recycling, until it costs them
