OTTAWA • For the first time since the pandemic began, Canada has passed a grim milestone, with more new Covid-19 cases per 100,000 people than in the United States. There have been roughly 22 new recorded cases per 100,000 in the country over the past seven days, compared with 21 such cases per 100,000 in the US. Ontario is the hardest hit, with hospitals coming under increasing strain, especially in Toronto, the country's largest city. "This is the worst moment of the pandemic thus far," Dr Kevin Smith, chief executive of the University Health Network (UHN), said. "Our ICUs are full." Ontario has ordered all but emergency operations cancelled across most of the province for the first time since March last year. Patients scheduled for cancer, cardiac and brain surgery are being told to wait as intensive care units fill with Covid-19 patients. Toronto's The Hospital for Sick Children has opened an overflow unit to treat adults. Prince Philip had rich Hollywood history depicted in film and TV
Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh – who died April 9 at 99 – spent most of his life as a stalwart companion to his bride, who became Queen Elizabeth II unexpectedly in 1956. Through those many years, in addition to several documentaries where he appeared as himself, the prince was portrayed by a variety of actors in movies and television. The most recent and high-profile depiction has been on Netflix’s hit series The Crown, where Philip was played at various ages by two different British actors, with a third upcoming in the series’ fifth and sixth seasons. An American was cast as Philip in The Queen, while one of his real-life friends took the reins in a 1982 TV movie for CBS. He was even portrayed in another TV movie by the actor who menaced Middle-earth as Saruman in Peter Jackson’s Lord Of The Rings and The Hobbit trilogies. North Korea’s Kim cites 1990s famine in urging work to alleviate economic crises
SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korean leader Kim Jong Un urged ruling party officials to wage another "Arduous March" of work and sacrifice, state media reported on Friday, linking the current economic crises to a period in the 1990s of famine and disaster. "Arduous March" was a term adopted by officials to rally citizens during a famine that killed as many as 3 million North Koreans after the fall of the Soviet Union, which had been a major backer of Pyongyang's communist founders. The period is often talked about as a historic event, but Kim's apparent comparison to current problems comes after he earlier in the week said the country faces the "worst-ever situation." His comments were made in a speech on Thursday at the closing of a conference for low-level Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) officials, where he had urged them to be more proactive and responsible in carrying out the country's new five-year economic plan, adopted at a party congress in January. "I made up my mind to ... » Learn More about North Korea’s Kim cites 1990s famine in urging work to alleviate economic crises
Liverpool strike late to end record Anfield losing streak
Jurgen Klopp admitted a weight has been lifted from Liverpool's shoulders after Trent Alexander-Arnold's injury-time winner secured a 2-1 victory over Aston Villa and ended a record run of defeats at Anfield on Saturday. The English champions had lost their previous six games at Anfield and fell behind again when Alisson Becker failed to keep out Ollie Watkins's first-half strike. Liverpool were then controversially denied an equaliser as a dubious VAR review ruled out Roberto Firmino's reply. But Mohamed Salah levelled before Alexander-Arnold responded in style to the criticism he has received of late. "It felt massive to win. A real relief," said Klopp after victory briefly took Liverpool up to fourth in the Premier League. "I can't remember the last time we did it easy but it's fine in our situation after losing six home games." Alexander-Arnold was dropped from England manager Gareth Southgate's squad last month and was at fault for Real Madrid's second goal as ... » Learn More about Liverpool strike late to end record Anfield losing streak

Wizards upset Jazz, Embiid dominates as Sixers rout Mavs
Bradley Beal scored 34 points and Russell Westbrook bagged a triple double as the Washington Wizards ended the Utah Jazz's 24-game home winning streak with a 125-121 victory in Salt Lake City on Monday. Donovan Mitchell delivered a 42-point gem for Utah but could not prevent the under-strength Western Conference leaders from sliding to a surprise defeat against a Wizards team struggling near the foot of the East. Utah, with Mike Conley and Jordan Clarkson absent from the line-up, looked to be racing towards a 25th straight home victory after a dazzling opening quarter saw them put up 42 points. Mitchell contributed 17 points in that burst of early scoring, but Washington responded superbly to outscore Utah 37-23 in the second for a 70-65 half-time lead. Washington took control in the third period with a 19-8 run, and with Mitchell's touch suddenly deserting him, Utah were left chasing the game in the fourth. Beal's 34-point display was complemented by Westbrook's triple, with ... » Learn More about Wizards upset Jazz, Embiid dominates as Sixers rout Mavs
