US grains group to Philippines: Be transparent on ASF cases WASHINGTON DC, USA — A US business group is calling on the Philippines to be more transparent in handling the African swine fever as delaying the release or even hiding details from the public will likely backfire. The US Grains Council, an inclusive organization of grains producers, said the Philippines should be more open about the ASF situatuon and not imitate China, which it said has been sugarcoating data on the deaths caused by ASF. The US is a major exporter of meat products to the Philippines. Last year, it exported about 40 million kilograms of pork to the Philippines making it the third largest source of pork products. "It would help [that the Philippines] is transparent. With China, their government is trying to keep it a secret. But the more transparent they can be, the better," US Grains Council senior director for Global Programs Cary Sifferath said in a meeting here. "You can … [Read more...] about US grains group to Philippines: Be transparent on ASF cases

Taken a few years before the Second World War, these images today are a rarity. Given that they are moving images, their historical value is even higher – filmed over 80 years ago. Japan Yin Thwe (Japanese Offspring) is one of the most famous films by the director U Nyi Pu, who was considered the godfather of the Burmese film in the 1920s. He also starred in the film Myitta Nit Thuyar (Love and Liquor), which made the young director one of the nation’s first film stars. A lost person can be found one day, but a dead person is gone forever. Time eventually consumes everything. Film archives are a powerful way to preserve important parts of the past, in the face of an ever-changing and devouring world. The golden age of Burmese film was thought to be dead and buried, destroyed by decades of neglect under military rule. But it turns out these interesting reflections of the past may have just been forgotten, ready to be revived again. U Nyi Pu’s films may evoke … [Read more...] about Bringing back a long-lost film with Japan’s help

Bangkok has become one of our favorite destinations for obvious reasons: its interesting, preserved heritage sites that speak well of their glorious past, the rich flora and fauna, food and fruits (check out the pungent and buttery kanyao variety of durian; duku langsat or lanzones; atis or sugar apple, pomegranate, guava, dragon fruit) and a personal favorite, crispy banana chips with tamarind paste. There are good buys in weekend markets, while modern retail shops offer a wide variety of products and services. We can’t seem to have enough of it. To sum up our Bangkok experience, I’ll rate from bad (in a good way) to baad (a rip off). Bad: I booked our airport pickup online (Viator for P2,262.39 or US$43.14). The six-passenger van was new, clean and spacious. The driver was polite and experienced. Baad: It took us over 40 minutes to find the van. My name was spelled wrong, making it difficult for me to spot the welcome sign displayed among hundreds of signs. In exhaustion, … [Read more...] about Bad, baad Bangkok!
