Debate to begin in US Senate on Biden’s $1.9 trillion Covid-19 relief bill
A sharply divided U.S. Senate will begin a contentious debate on Friday on a $1.9 trillion coronavirus aid bill that is President Joe Biden 's first major legislative initiative, with Democrats pressing ahead without any Republican support. The Senate voted on Thursday to take up the bill in a party-line 51-50 vote, with Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris breaking the tie. But Republicans delayed the start of the debate by forcing the hours-long reading of the full text of the 628-page measure. The Senate is expected to debate the bill three hours on Friday before considering a multitude of amendments, which could require a marathon voting session, before taking a vote on final passage in a process that could extend into the weekend. Republicans are expected to use procedural maneuvers to slow the process. If the Senate approves the bill, it will have to be sent back to the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives for final passage. Democrats hope Biden can ... » Learn More about Debate to begin in US Senate on Biden’s $1.9 trillion Covid-19 relief bill
World Insights: Biden under pressure to act on America’s gun violence
Video Player Close by Matthew Rusling WASHINGTON, March 4 (Xinhua) -- Apart from working hard to get the COVID-19 pandemic under control, U.S. President Joe Biden is under pressure to take action on the country's "epidemic of gun violence." Biden called on Congress to enact "commonsense gun law reforms" last month on the third anniversary of the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, southeastern state of Florida, which claimed 17 lives, including 14 students. "Today, I am calling on Congress to enact commonsense gun law reforms, including requiring background checks on all gun sales, banning assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, and eliminating immunity for gun manufacturers who knowingly put weapons of war on our streets," Biden said in a statement. Stressing there was no time to wait, Biden said his administration "will take action to end our epidemic of gun violence and make our schools and communities safer." Biden agrees war power authority to be updated: White House
Video Player Close WASHINGTON, March 5 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Joe Biden agreed that authorizations for the use of military force (AUMF) that justify U.S. military operations need to be updated, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said on Friday. In her daily press briefing, Psaki told reporters that Biden agreed the AUMFs are "long overdue for updated". She said Biden wanted to discuss "a narrow and specific framework moving forward" and would cooperate with Democratic Senator Tim Kaine on this issue. Her comments came two days after Senator Kaine and Republican Senator Todd Young introduced legislation to repeal the 1991 and 2002 AUMF to curb the president's war power. U.S. military conducted airstrikes against facilities used by Iranian-backed militant groups in eastern Syria last week, which killed one militia member and injured two others. Lawmakers from both parties were dissatisfied with the Biden administration's lack of consultation before the operation ... » Learn More about Biden agrees war power authority to be updated: White House
Have set up an alliance ready to help India achieve its renewable energy goals: US
A top Biden Administration official Friday said the US has put together a coalition of several countries to help India achieve its ambitious target of producing about 450 gigawatts of renewable power by 2030, costing around USD600 billion. John Kerry , the special presidential envoy for climate, said the US has set up a consortium of several countries eager to help India with funds and knowhow to achieve this ambitious goal. Kerry made this remark to former Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz during a virtual Fireside Chat at IHS CERAWeek, the world's premier energy conference. "India has a plan to produce about 450 gigawatts of renewable power by 2030, it's a very ambitious goal. It's a great goal but they need about 600 billion dollars to be able to help make that kind of a transition," he said. For India, funding this goal is perhaps one of the biggest challenges, but they are determined to lead and to be an important player here, he said, adding that the United ... » Learn More about Have set up an alliance ready to help India achieve its renewable energy goals: US
Biden calls lifting mask mandates by two red states ‘Neanderthal thinking’
WASHINGTON - US President Joe Biden on Wednesday criticized Republican governors in southern states of Texas and Mississippi over their decisions to reverse mask mandates and other COVID-19 safety policies, calling these actions "Neanderthal thinking". "I think it's a big mistake. Look, I hope everybody's realized by now, these masks make a difference. We are on the cusp of being able to fundamentally change the nature of this disease because of the way in which we're able to get vaccines in people's arms," Biden told reporters from the White House. "The last thing -- the last thing we need is Neanderthal thinking that in the meantime, everything's fine, take off your mask, forget it. It still matters," said the president. Though the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warned of a fourth resurgence in coronavirus cases earlier this week, Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves said on Tuesday that all state regulations would be lifted starting on Wednesday. "Starting ... » Learn More about Biden calls lifting mask mandates by two red states ‘Neanderthal thinking’
Star Trek inspired scientist’s NASA journey
Indian-American engineer Swati Mohan played pivotal role in NASA Perseverance rover’s Mars landing Dr Swati Mohan, the Indian-American aerospace engineer, who played a pivotal role in the successful landing of NASA’s Perseverance rover on Mars, has told President Joe Biden that her path to the premier US space agency began when she watched the first episode of Star Trek as a child. Mohan is the guidance and controls operations lead for the Perseverance rover mission, acting as the “eyes and ears” for NASA’s most sophisticated spacecraft to date. She played a key role in landing the US space agency’s historic Perseverance rover on the Martian surface on February 18. Mohan was also the first to confirm that the rover had successfully touched down on the Martian surface after surviving a particularly tricky plunge through the atmosphere of the Red Planet. Vaccine passports, Covid’s next political flashpoint
The next major flashpoint over coronavirus response has already provoked cries of tyranny and discrimination in Britain, protests in Denmark, digital disinformation in the United States and geopolitical skirmishing within the European Union . The subject of debate: vaccine passports — government-issued cards or smartphone badges stating that the bearer has been inoculated against the coronavirus. The idea is to allow families to reunite, economies to restart and hundreds of millions of people who have received a shot to return to a degree of normalcy, all without spreading the virus. Some versions of the documentation might permit bearers to travel internationally. Others would allow entry to vaccinated-only spaces like gyms, concert venues and restaurants. While such passports are still hypothetical in most places, Israel became the first to roll out its own last week, capitalizing on its high vaccination rate. Several European countries are considering following. ... » Learn More about Vaccine passports, Covid’s next political flashpoint

This downfall has been reflected in the Indian indices. HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Housing Development Finance Corporation, Axis Bank, State Bank of India, Bajaj Finance were some of the major contributors to the fall in Sensex. ONGC, NTPC, Maruti Suzuki, Tech Mahindra, HCL Tech, Titan Company were the major gainer in the Sensex. The domestic Equity market went lower on Thursday (March 4) as the rising bond's yield slipped din the global markets.
