India’s longest-serving woman prisoner, Nalini Sriharan, 52, came out on parole for 30 days from Vellore Central Prison on Thursday morning. This is the first time that Nalini has come out of prison on an ordinary parole since her arrest in June 1991, 28 years ago. Brief emergency paroles granted to her in the past have lasted only a few hours — once for her brother’s wedding, and on another occasion after her father’s death in 2016. Nalini was granted parole after her petition, in which she said she had to make arrangements for the wedding of her daughter, was accepted by the Madras High Court. Nalini’s daughter Harithra, a medical practitioner, lives in London. The hearing in the alleged conflict of interest case involving Indian cricketing great Rahul Dravid concluded here on Tuesday with BCCI ethics officer D K Jain saying “his order can be expected soon”. Nalini Sriharan, India’s longest-serving woman prisoner and convicted in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, is set to walk out of the Vellore central prison on a month-long ordinary parole. The Madras High Court had on July 5 granted her the parole, her first such leave in 28 years of incarceration, to make arrangements for the wedding of her daughter, Harithra Sriharan, who was born in prison and is currently a medical practitioner in London. Nalini was granted 12-hour parole in 2016 to attend the last rites of her father P Sankara Narayanan. According to Nalini’s counsel M Radhakrishnan, Nalini may be released on an ordinary parole on Sunday or Monday after completing prison formalities. A Delhi court Tuesday issued bailable warrants against Congress MP Shashi Tharoor after he failed to turn up for a court hearing in a defamation case. Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, Naveen Kumar Kashyap issued the bailable warrants in the sum of Rs 5,000 and notice for his surety on November 27, 2019. The court took notice of the fact that Tharoor and his counsel did not turn up for the court hearing and no exemption application was filed for his non-appearance. It added that the complainant in the case, Rajiv Babbar and his main counsel were also not present. The court noted that the exemption application filed on behalf of Babbar was “vague in nature”. “It is stated in the application that he is in personal difficulty but what is such difficulty, is not explained at all in such application.
