Iran says production of 60% enriched uranium ‘underway’

Iran has begun producing uranium at 60 percent purity and is making nine grams per hour, the head of the Islamic republic's atomic agency said on Friday. "The enrichment of uranium to 60 percent is underway at the Martyr Ahmadi Roshan nuclear facility" in Natanz, Ali Akbar Salehi of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran said, quoted by Tasnim news agency. "We are now getting nine grams (almost a third of an ounce) per hour," Salehi said later on state television. Iran announced this week that it would boost its uranium enrichment to 60 percent purity in response to an attack Sunday on the Natanz nuclear facility that it blamed on arch-foe Israel. The move takes Iran closer to the 90 percent purity level needed for use in a nuclear weapon. The Islamic republic has gradually rolled back its nuclear commitments since 2018, when then US president Donald Trump withdrew from a multilateral deal and began imposing sanctions. The 2015 deal known formally as the Joint ... » Learn More about Iran says production of 60% enriched uranium ‘underway’

Image: Instagram/@lizasoberano Celebrities, fans and rights advocates have been showing their support for Kapamilya star Liza Soberano after she formally filed a case against the internet provider employee who posted a rape threat against the actress on social media. The outpouring of support came just a few hours after the actress went to the Office of the City Prosecutor of Quezon City to file the complaint earlier today, Sept. 24. Actress Alessandra de Rossi, for one, took to Twitter to thank Soberano for standing up and to warn netizens to refrain from posting such distasteful and violent remarks. “Matuto lang galangin ang isa’t isa online. Lesson na ito para sa lahat,” she said. “Salamat, Liza. ‘Kaso’ is not good and magastos pa.” (I hope everyone learns to respect each other online. This is a lesson for everybody. Citigroup to shut down PH consumer operations

Banking giant Citigroup will close its consumer operations in the Philippines as it focuses more on wealth centers in Asia and Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA). In a statement on Friday, the global lender said its strategic actions in global consumer banking will allow it to direct investments and resources to the businesses where it has the greatest scale and growth potential. “As a result of the ongoing refresh of our strategy, we have decided that we are going to double down on wealth,” Jane Fraser, the chief executive officer of Citi, was quoted as saying. Fraser added that Citi will operate its consumer banking franchise in Asia and EMEA solely from four wealth centers — Singapore, Hong Kong, United Arab Emirates and London. As a result, Citi announced it intends to pursue exits from its consumer franchises in 13 markets across the two regions. The affected businesses include the consumer franchises in Australia, Bahrain, China, India, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, ... » Learn More about Citigroup to shut down PH consumer operations

FB, Apple exchange accusations

CALIFORNIA: A feud between tech giants heated up Thursday (Friday in Manila) as Apple’s chief executive implied Facebook’s business model promotes disinformation and violence, while the social network reportedly prepares an antitrust lawsuit against Apple. The suit accuses Apple of abusing control of its App Store by requiring outside app developers, such as Facebook, to abide by rules not applied to its own apps, tech publication The Information reported. “As we have said repeatedly, we believe Apple is behaving anti-competitively by using their control of the App Store to benefit their bottom line at the expense of app developers and small businesses,” Facebook told Agence France Presse, declining to confirm or deny the report. Apple did not reply to a request for comment, but chief executive Tim Cook seemed to take aim at Facebook when he blasted “disinformation and conspiracy theories juiced by algorithms” during a virtual data privacy conference in Brussels on Thursday, ... » Learn More about FB, Apple exchange accusations

Paying high price for unfinished work

A sand quarry manager learnt a lesson to only engage a reliable contractor to undertake his house renovation project. He paid for works on his house to be done by a contractor, but it was not fulfilled. He then took the matter up with the Johor Baru Consumer Claims Tribunal, which ordered the contractor to return over RM40,000 to him. Sam Fut Meng had hired a contractor with an office in Kulai to renovate his single-storey house in Taman Puteri Wangsa, Ulu Tiram near Johor Baru. The initial cost of the renovation package was RM51,200 as quoted by the contractor to instal an auto gate and kitchen cabinets including the top flooring. “The sum was revised to RM55,000 to include renovation of the car porch and instalment of a canopy, ’’ said Sam when met outside the tribunal office in Menara Ansar. The 60-year-old made the first payment of RM5,200 on Oct 14,2019 to the company’s bank account followed by RM25,000 on Nov 17,2019 and RM13,000 on Dec 11,2019. BSFIs told to manage reputational risk

Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP)-supervised financial institutions (BSFIs) have one year to implement reputational risk management in their operations, according to the monetary authorities. In a statement on Friday, the central bank announced its policy-making Monetary Board approved the guidelines on reputational risk management, which set out the supervisory expectations for BSFIs on the identification, assessment and management of reputational risks that are commensurate to their size, nature, complexity of operations, overall risk profile and systemic importance. According to the BSP, reputational risk is closely interlinked with other risk exposures such as credit, market, liquidity and operational risks, including those arising from cybersecurity threats and negative information in the social media. Such risks may trigger reputational risk or vice versa. In that regard, it said BSFIs are expected to adopt a framework to holistically and actively manage reputational risk ... » Learn More about BSFIs told to manage reputational risk

We’re not producing nuke weapons – Iran

TEHRAN: Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has dismissed concerns about Iran’s plan to enrich uranium to 60-percent purity, saying that “we are not looking for a nuclear bomb.” “Some have interpreted that 60 percent is a means to reaching 90 percent (of uranium enrichment). It is not correct. It is wrong to think that we are paving the way for the production of the atomic bomb,” Rouhani was quoted by official IRNA news agency as saying. “Today, if we want, we can enrich 90 percent (uranium), but … we are not looking for a nuclear bomb,” he said. The United States should return to the 2015 nuclear deal or the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action and remove anti-Iran sanctions, he said. On Tuesday, Iran informed the International Atomic Energy Agency of its plan to enrich uranium at 60-percent purity following the attack on its Natanz nuclear facility. Also, Iran said that it would install an additional 1,000 centrifuges with 50 percent higher enrichment capacity at the nuclear ... » Learn More about We’re not producing nuke weapons – Iran

Drug trafficker-turned-social worker among 30 ex-offenders in new book on how they left their past behind

SINGAPORE - "Your start to life does not determine your destination." This is a quote social worker Thomas Liao found inspiring during his rehabilitation journey, after a 3½-year stint behind bars for drug trafficking. He found meaning in it during his personal reflection as he struggled to leave his troubled past behind, Mr Liao, 33, told The Straits Times. He had a bad start in life, with his parents divorcing when he was just three years old, and he was raised by his aunt. He took a wrong turn, taking and trafficking in drugs, mostly synthetic drugs like Ecstasy and ketamine, to numb his pain and make money. This lifestyle eventually landed him with a 5½-year jail sentence in 2008. During his prison stint, he found hope and guidance from his Christian faith. He realised the importance of family and relationships, and upon his release in 2011, due to a two-year remission period, decided to become a social worker to help families. Pfizer vaccine may need third dose

WASHINGTON: The head of Pfizer said in an interview aired Thursday that people will “likely” need a third dose of his company’s Covid-19 shot within six to 12 months of vaccination while elsewhere defending the relatively higher cost of the jab. CEO Albert Bourla also said annual vaccinations against the coronavirus may well be required. “We need to see what would be the sequence and for how often we need to do that, that remains to be seen,” Bourla told CNBC in an interview recorded on April 1. “A likely scenario is that there will be likely a need for a third dose, somewhere between six and 12 months and then from there, there will be an annual revaccination, but all of that needs to be confirmed,” he said, adding that variants will play a “key role.” “It is extremely important to suppress the pool of people that can be susceptible to the virus,” he said.
