By Ricardo Special to the Star Tues., April 30, 2019 Why do I have such a problem with muffins? When I want to provoke my wife, I tell her that a good muffin is actually just a cupcake! My daughters think I’m dated. And they’re probably right ... But in my mind a muffin is supposed to be “healthy,” and a cupcake is, well, a cup “cake.” I’m actually sad for muffins. I feel like they’re suffering from an identity crisis. Is it a protein-packed breakfast? A light dessert? A travel-friendly snack? Or a miniature cake? There are many people out there who think a muffin is a muffin — a small quick bread — while a cupcake could go either way. Some fast food chains even go so far as to call their cupcakes muffins! But where does a muffin cross the … [Read more...] about What’s the difference between a cupcake and a muffin?
After all these years of exchanging barbs here, especially with Somsak Pola, it is heart-warming and refreshing to read something from Vint Chavala that is not politics-related. Coming from Thailand’s southerly neighbour, I was exposed to a multitude of languages and dialects at a young age. In Malaysia, it is not unusual to find an ethnic Indian speaking Hokkien or Cantonese dialect splattered with some Malay plus some English slang in the mix. The downside is, everyone is a Jack-of-all-languages but master of none. While the official language is Bahasa Malaysia, the commercial sector still uses English as the main medium of communication. One may argue that this is a remnant of the British colonial rule that ought to be eradicated since we are now an independent country. But English serves us well in international commerce, so it’s unlikely to be changed anytime soon. Personally, I feel the key difference between Thais and Malaysians when it comes … [Read more...] about Just chill, la! A Malaysian guide to speaking English
The outcome may rest with Dtac, the telecom operator holding his mobile phone records. Thanathorn’s accusers say there is no way he had time to travel by road from Buri Ram to Bangkok on the January 8 deadline to sign the transfer of his media shares to his mother. Unless his chauffeur was driving at 200 kilometres per hour, that is. Thanathorn’s response? Check with Dtac and see where I was on the afternoon of January 8, he told veteran journalist Suthichai Yoon in an interview. Dtac responded that any request for Thanathorn’s phone records had to come from the man himself; nobody else could check. It’s an extremely important issue. Even if Thanathorn ends up having his election candidacy nullified, the events of January 8 will go a long way toward defining his political fate. Being disqualified for an oversight regarding his V-Luck Media shares would make him a political martyr. Telling a lie to protect himself or being involved in fabricating evidence … [Read more...] about Thanathorn’s acid test: The real deal or just another political opportunist?
